I´m afraid I cannot add any facts but when you look at their outfit you can see a mixture of Heer and Fallschirmjäger costumes. I would thought that this picture was taken at Eastern Prussia winter 1944/45 and they belonged to Panzerdivision Hermann Göring.

Rauli

Quite a good guess I think. One of the soldiers even has a paratrooper helmet, I wonder if that existed in the Herman Göring division. It seems like the photo is from a book.

The helmet-eagle of the second soldier from left looks as he has swung wings. So maybe Lufwaffen Helmets.

Really nice photo, thanks.Any ideas as to why such an abundance of G43 sniper rifles in one place and isn't that a Russian rifle third from the right?
Anyway if it is late war the men look in genuine good spirits.Surprising, if they are in East Prussia it can't have been much fun!

That might be a Moisin Nagant, the third from the left looks like a Mauser.

In Tomas Jakl's book May 1945 in the Czech Lands, the photo is captioned as showing Hermann Göring Division men "...in re-conquered Bautzen/Budisin, 25 April 1945." There's more to the top of the photo in the book, and the building has a sign stating "Kubschütz".

I don't have any more information, but sometimes when you see a rare item in wide use, it could mean that they passed near a factory making such a thing, and in this case, helped themselves to a bunch of sniper scopes.

A question about the pic. The first soldier, the one with the Fallschirmjaeger helmet, what kind of weapon is he carrying on? One of the German version of the Sten, perhaps?

COOL PICTURE

Post by Fallschirmjäger » 24 Jan 2006, 02:34

First of all major cool picture for shure, never seen it before, the one with the FJ helmet has to be an ex member of them,as way back in africa/tunisia the 5th FJ regt im shure it is was incorporated into the herman goring division, but then again they where pretty much all captured there in 1943/tunisia.But also elsewhere maybe italy the same thing happened or on the eastern front FJ units where put into the herman goring to bolster them, give some exp men. 8)

Hello

Anything about the fighting around Bautzen in April 1945 ??

The caption to the pfoto says "Re-capture of Bautzen 25. april 1945"

Bautzen is to the south of Berlin, more like around Dresden, isnt it ??

Any info on the units there at the time.

I ask, because a friend of mine has relatives in Bautzen - and he is very interested !!

Regards
Kurt

The book doesn't have any details on the Bautzen fighting, at least not that I noticed (the text can be hard to follow, as it is in dual Czech/English on the same page).
