Books , for example Hans Schäuflers "Panzer an der Weichsel" or Hans Jürgen Pantenius' "Letzte Schlacht an der Ostfront" are very recommendable

Here is some info about the Battle of Danzig in 1945:

On the 25th of march 1945, having reached the Gulf of Danzig, Rokossovski reported that the German defenders had been split into 3 pockets, one at Danzig, another ay Gdnyia and a third at the Putziger-Nehring split. Katuchov's tanks, with 19th Army, struck along the coat towards Gdnya. Fedyuninski 2nd Shock Army moved towards the southern suburb of Danzig. The attack on Danzig was easier from the north, but Gdynia fell first, stormed on the 26th of march. Some days were needed to clear the port of remnants, bu which time the assault on Danzig began, preceded by a rejection of the Soviet offer of surrender. Attacked from 3 sides on the 26th of march, the garrison fought from building to building, calling once more on German warships to fire support. After a few days it was all over, the survivors fled to the mouth of the Vistula and on march 30th Danzig was cleared of German troops.

I have to mentionned also that the Foreign Volunteer Waffen-SS Charlemagne Division was involved in that Battle, you can find some info about that in (French-Polish-German) by visiting the Charlemagne website.

Hope this help
Regards

Hi.

First Russians attacked toward Sopot and divided German defence into two parts in Gdansk and Gdynia. Than attack was on the line Sopot-Gdansk center. After some fightings Germans moved into Westerplatte and kept Vistula river mouth.

I lived in Gdansk so I'm quite familiar with its history. Please ask what exactly do you want to know.
However still some questions are unanswered for me, for example where exactly were destroyed thanks of the 4th Pancer Division?

Some links in Polish, but maps and pictures could help you:

mietek -

Excellent map on that Pom. web site. Have you ever seen in the Polish literature a complete list of all German units - Heer, Luftwaffe, KM, etc., down to the smallest independent Kp. and Zug - that were trapped in the Danzig pocket in March-April 1945? I'm particularly interested in Luftwaffe ground (Bodenorganisation - signal, Flak, airfield service and support troops) units.

Thanks,

Hello Mietek, you have just mentioned, thet there was an soviet attack near sopot(Zoppot) near danzig.
If i'm correct some units of the grossdeutschland defended zoppot, do you perhaps know which unit?
Or which wehrmacht units defended zoppot?

Thanks Pavle.

Hi there Mietek,

Thank you very much for that site. Especially the foto's were really good. I'd like to know some more about the street fighting in Gdansk itself and the role and employment of halftracks, werfers and tanks in the battle (I thought I saw a Josef Stalin tank in one of the pictures).

Thanks,

Nick

I thought 1st ID was defending in the Konigsbergs Samland area? Was the 1st evacuated towards Danzig at some stage?

Cheers

It was in the Samland area, but elements were supposed to be around Danzig too as I was told by my grandfather (he was wounded there and evacuated in January 1945). I just want to check it out. Perhaps he confused some things, but he was definately evacuated from one of the ports around Danzig.

Miha

Miha,

many wounded soldiers or refugees were evacuated from Eastern Prussia (via Pillau or the Nehrung) first to Danzig or Gdynia/Gotenhafen and then from there to the more Western parts of Germany. Perhaps this happened to your grandfather, too.

Michate

Miha, I am unaware of any operational deplyment of 1 Inf Div around Danzig, so I think the likely course of events is as described above, ie evacuation of wounded.

Mietek, 4 Pz. Div. was mainly in action west of the city, defending Zuckau/Pempau, withdrawing by stages to Viereck/Bastenhagen/Leesen, then to the city itself. It also had to loan much of its armour to neighbouring formations, with a particularly notable action taking place east of Oliva where a small armoured force supported 389 Inf. Div. at 'Neue Welt'.
