Horse riding - Admiral Canaris and Heydrich

Post by Robert Jackson » 25 May 2006 18:11

Hi guys.

I have been reading in one of my Heydrich books, that Heydrich and Admiral Canaris used to go horse-riding together.

This has always been a hobby of mine and in fact I have my own horse which is stabled at my uncle's.

Just wondering if any other famous Nazi leaders or generals used to enjoy horse-riding. In England it is considered a "gentlemen's sport" so I would think some of the generals would be happy in the saddle.

Thanks for all help (a sensible question and interesting question I hope) :D

Robert

Reichsleiter Dr. Robert Ley made it obligatory for Napola scholars to 'learn horseriding, not to instill some bourgeois cliché but for the scholar to learn to control the animal totally with his will. The aryan race is a race of masters, and through controlling the horse, the scholar will learn to instill his will upon other people as well.'

Walter Buch was a horseman. This scan is from an original pic that I own.
Note the ribbon on his right breast pocket. I'm new at this, and I never realized the significance of it until Jolly Man informed me. This forum and all the members are great!

Here is a rather nice portrait of Eberhard Quirsfeld from 1936. By the way, is it just me but I cannot see what appear to be photographs posted above, i.e. "Hermann Fegelein and his brother Waldemar"

Can any of the moderators or anyone with computer knowledge tell me why I can see three pictures: "Canaris and SS Gruppenführer Kurt Kaul" form Phil, "Walter Buch was a horseman" from Hexar and my Eberhard Quirsfeld. I see nothing on the other three: SS-Stubf. Waldemar Goetze - Heimwer Danzig, Hermann Fegelein and his brother Waldemar or Amon Goth.
I'm properly logged in so it can't be that.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Derek,

I can't see them either so presumably they have not been submitted.

Best regards

I deleted the posts without a pic to avoid confusion.
If anybody has for example pics of Hermann Fegelein winning the 18th German "Springderby" in Hamburg-Flottbek (May 1937) with his horse "Schorsch" he is welcome.
Also desiderable is a pic of his brother Waldemar Fegelein winning the "Deutsches Springderby 1939" in Hamburg-Flottbek with his horse "Nordrud".
Other pics with famous horsemen are welcome too.

I woiuld suggest for anyone interested that they try and borrow or buy a copy of Riding East by Mark Yerger. The History of the SS Cavalry units during the first half of the Russian campaign with a chapter on SS Reiter unit pre-war. Good pics as well
