Tere, tere! Without doubt "there is no fire without any smoke". Like Carl mentioned Mäkelä as a former intelligence official may well have had good information on the mentioned incident. How truthful and accurate this story is in details is another question especially if the primary source is... Jukka L. Mäkelä himself. The kind of operation Mäkelä describes in his book fits although to the "frame" and explains well why the high Soviet officers were so surprised when they arrived in Helsinki in autumn 1944.

Many "unsourced" books actually contain such "background sources lists" and in some cases this source material may be either in the Military Archive, in some other archive or with the author(s).

----

As interesting as this may be, perhaps we should focus back to the city of Viipuri in June 1944...?

Still, what was moderate to the ADD, was quite large scale to the Finns (142 bombers, according to Kesäsota ("Summer War") by Atso Haapanen).

I have found list of personal losses of 276 BAD (Pe-2 division) and 113 BAD (Il-4 division) of June 1944. Does anyone have sources to to compare them? How many crew members are still missing in this June 1944 list?

*)The point here is that we can't be sure are those MIA official declarations even near always same as the day when crew members really were lost. For instance they seems to have been no claims of FAF and Kuhlmey unit in 21 June of any Il-4s. But at least 2 in day before (20 June).
