Rudolf von Eschwege was recommended to be awarded the PLM but died beforehand.

Rudolf von Eschwege was an almost legendary figure between the Bulgarian soldiers on the Salonika front. Soldiers from his Second Bulgarian army used to say when saw him flying on his Fokker over the positions - "Look! "Rusijat" (The blond one) is patrolling! The Entanteans will not be flying today". The soldiers from 10th Belomorska division called him the "Orela na Bjalo more" (The eagle of the Aegean). Jolly and always jocking he sometimes used to "walk" on his hands down from his plane while returning from mission. His death on 21 November 1917 was mourned by Bulgarian soldiers and officers alike who used to regard him as "Our von Richthoffen".

Perhaps this thread should be known as "Ritter des Ordens Pour le Mérite der Deutschen Fliegertruppe und Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte" ?

Dear Fellow Imperial German WW I Avfans:

Bader's Briar here...my main historic interest in aviation history IS during the pioneer and WW I eras, and I'm just a small bit curious why the words "...und Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte" haven't been added yet, as the Fliegertruppe (full name of it in Deutsch, supposedly, was "Die Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches", was known by the full five-word name before October 1916, when it became the Luftstreitkräfte.

I've a pair of Kurt Wintgens photos to add, first one from a different Sanke card...

and I.m fairly certain that I found the pair of these in my copy of the last C&C USA issue from Summer 1985, from the article entitled "Ltn. Wintgens and his War Letters" in that issue.

Kurt occupies a singular place in all of military aviation history...his E.5/15 production prototype Eindecker, one of the five Fokker M.5K/MG machines built with synchronized Parabellum MG 14 armament, was the very first true fighter plane to use a synchronized machine gun in defeating an opposing Allied aircraft over the Foret de Parroy near Luneville, France on the early evening (about 1800 hrs) of July 1st, 1915. The French Morane-Saulnier Model L "Parasol" that Wintgens had the victory over was most likely from Escadrille MS 48, and since it did land back in Allied territory, was not a "claimable" victory. Still, that engagement marks the date in military aviation history when a format of "fighter aircraft" that would soon swarm through the skies over much of Europe earned the first aerial victory, and as such has to be noted.

Otto Parschau flew the Fokker A.III, serialled "A.16/15" that essentially became the Fokker Eindecker prototype, and when his original "green machine" Fokker monoplane (the same A.16/15) was returned to the Fokker firm, he received the very first of the M.5K/MG machines - the E.1/15 marked aircraft - to replace it. Oswald Boelcke and Max Immelmann shared the E.3/15 machine of that series, until Max got his own "production" E.I serialled E.13/15, with Wintgens getting the E.5/15 pioneering fighter airframe.

Sure would like to know - verifyably, that is - who within the Fliegertruppe actually was issued the E.2/15 and E.4/15 machines (if they were ever issued to pilots to begin with), as I've got Fokker factory photos of the E.4/15 machine before it left for the Front, but not after it left the factory.
