Let's build - OKW / Befehlshaber des Ersatzheeres, AHA

#1

Post by Alecci » 01 Feb 2004, 19:38

I'm not exatcly sure if I've posted this topic in the correct forum, so please excuse me if this is the wrong place.

Anyway, I'm looking for a detailed OoB for the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Replacement Army and for the General Army Office. I would like to know all the branches, departments and sections of said offices as well as their chiefs and other important officers, during the period of October 1943 - August 1944.

My sincere thanks if you would help me out on this one.

Regards

I do not have an organization chart, but I do know that Generaloberst Fromm commanded the Ersatzheer and Friedrich Olbricht the AHA.

I know the commanders of the offices, as well as their chiefs of staff. I also know the names of some of the officers, though I do not know there specific positions.

The names of officers who were working there that I know of are:

Col.-Gen. Fritz Fromm, Replacement Army/Commander (01.09.1939-20.07.1944)
Gen. Friedrich Olbricht, General Army Office/Chief (01.02.1940-20.07.1944)
Maj.-Gen. Gerhard Kühne, Replacement Army/Chief of Staff (01.04.1943-31.05.1944)
Col. Mertz, General Army Office/Chief of Staff (01.06.1944-20.07.1944)
Col. Graf Stauffenberg, General Army Office/Chief of Staff (01.11.1943-31.05.1944) and Replacement Army/Chief of Staff (01.06.1944-20.07.1944)
Col. von Roell, Replacement Army/Section Head (presumably)
Lt.-Col. Franz Herber, General Army Office/Quartermaster (presumably)
Lt.-Col. Karl Pridun, General Army Office/Section Head (presumably)
Lt.-Col. Bolko von der Heyde, Replacement Army/?
Lt.-Col. Fritz von der Lancken, General Army Office/Adjutant to Olbricht (presumably)
Maj. Fliessbach, ?

Alecci,

I really tried to give some support but it´s a huge task with a massive lack of info (I guess). The structure was the following (I guess):

1 BdE & Chef Heeresrüstung (Gen. Oberst Friedrich Fromm)
1.1 Allgemeines Heeresamt (Gen. d. Inf. Friedrich Olbricht)
1.2 Heeres-Waffenamt (Gen. d. Art. Emil Leeb)
1.3 Heeres-Verwaltungsamt (Gen. d. Art. Herbert Osterkamp)
1.4 Chef des Ausbildungswesens (Gen. d. Pi. Walter Kuntze)
1.5 Heeres-Feldzeugmeister ??? (Gen. d. Art. Walter Keiner)
1.6 Wehrkreise I-XIII, XVII, XVIII, XX, XXI, BuM, GG

I´m unfortunately unable to list the persons who held the positions in the Allgemeines Heeresamt as well as the exact structure but there were at least the following departments:

Abt. 2 (Infanterie)
Abt. 4 (Artillerie)
Abt. 5 (Pioniere und Festungen)
Abt. 6 (Schnelle Truppen)
Abt. 7 (Nachrichtentruppen)
Abt. 9 (Gasabwehr und Nebeltruppen)
Abt. 10 (Eisenbahnpioniere)

as well as the Inspectors with the BdE & Chef Heeresrüstung (In 2, In 4, In 5, In 6, In 7, In 9, In 10). Could be that the Inspectors themselves were subordinated to Chef des Ausbildungswesens or BdE & Chef Heeresrüstung directly.

btw: Fromm was Chief of Allgemeines Heeresamt from 01.09.1939-1940, too. From 26.08.1939-31.08.1939 BdE was Gen. d. Inf. Joachim von Stülpnagel, who had to retire and whose position was taken over by Fromm, too.

Regards!

That´s fine by me. :)

Hope we get the OKH once and for all cleared. btw: I have a sticky question and couldn´t get an answer so far:

Until 1941 we have an Ausbildungs-Abteilung/General Staff, which might ended with Bernuth. What happened with the Dept. from 1941 on?

In 1942 Obst. i. G. and Gen. Lt. (Bw) Alfred Zerbel took over an Ausbildungs-Abteilung. I wonder if this Dept. was

(1) a new Dept. of the General Staff,
(2) the old one still under the General Staff,
(3) a new Dept. under the Chef des Ausbildungswesens/BdE & Chef Heeresrüstung or
(4) the old one but now under the Chef des Ausbildungswesense/BdE & Chef Heeresrüstung.

The date of Zerbel´s start (04.09.1942) seems to correlate with Kuntze´s start as Chef des Ausbildungswesens (15.09.1942). Moreover Zerbel was placed z. Vfg. P 1 on 15.02.1945 and Kuntze ended on 31.01.1945. :?

Once again, gentlemen, I give you many thanks! As for the thread on the Feldgrau forum, I have made some corrections to that list of OKH myself.

As for staff structure of the General Army Office, I've come this far:

Chief:
Gen.d.Art. Fritz Fromm 01.Sep.1939-31.Jan.1940
Gen.Lt./Gen.d.Inf. Friedrich Olbricht 01.Feb.1940-20.Jul.1944
Gen.d.Art. Walther Keiner 01.Aug.1944-08.May.1945

Chief of Staff:
Obt.Lt./Obt. Kurt Haseloff 01.Sep.1939-31.Jan.1940
Obt./Gen.Maj. Karl-Erich Koehler 01.Feb.1940-28.Feb.1941
Obt. Helmuth Reinhardt 01.Mar.1941-31.Oct.1943
Obt.Lt./Obt. Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg 01.Nov.1943-31.May.1944
Obt. Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim 01.Jun.1944-20.Jul.1944
Obt. Bolko von der Heyde 01.Aug.1944-30.Sep.1944

Ia:
Obt. Karl-Erich Koehler 01.Sep.1939-31.Jan.1940
Maj./Obt.Lt. Joachim Meichssner 01.Mar.1943-31.Dec.1943
Obt.Lt. Bolko von der Heyde 01.Jan.1944-31.Jul.1944
Maj./Obt.Lt. Wolf von Zawadsky 01.Aug.1944-08.May.1945

Ia / I:
Obt.Lt. Karl Pridun

Ia / I / I:
Maj. Fritz Harnack

Ib:
Obt.Lt. Franz Herber

Ib / I:
Maj. ? Fliessbach

I now need someone to expand on the staff structure and give me more names and dates.

EDIT: Corrected Haseloff as indicated by Stauffenberg II below.

Stauffenberg II:

Many thanks for your correction. Like the honorable Oberstab said, nobody's perfect. :D

Other officers working on the staff in the General Army Office were:

Obt. Siegfried Wagner
Obt.Lt. Robert Bernardis
Obt.Lt. Fritz von der Lancken (adjutant to Chief)
Maj. Egbert Hayessen
Maj. Hans-Ulrich von Oertzen
Hptm. Wolfram Röhrig (Communications Chief)
Hptm. Friedrich-Karl Klausing (adjutant to Chief of Staff)

Anyone know anything more about these persons? Above all I want the dates of their postings to AHA and their specific positions on the staff.

Hi,

I was happy to provide assistance. Obviously, there are large gaps in the information that I provided. I've been looking for department heads of the Army Weapons Office for years now. I just can't seem to find any more information.

Thanks,

Doug

Does anyone have any further information of the staff compositions and their officers concerning the period October 1943 to August 1944 of the BdE and the AHA?

Or does anyone know where I could get such information?

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm also very interested in biographies of some of the above-mentioned officers, mainly those of Colonel (GS) Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim, Captain Klausing and Lieutenant (Res.) von Haeften. I'm particularly interested in promotion dates and dates of awards/decorations? Maybe this could be found in HPA files if any such exist? Where, if that would be the case, can I receive a copy of those?
