Hello everyone,
Are the following kanji combos equivalent? 戦斗 and 戦闘 Do they have similar meanings if not?

Thanks!

Tom
They are equivalent with the same meanings. 斗 is 簡化字 (Simplified Character) of 闘.

Many thanks, Fontessa!

Tom

Thanks "fontessa" for the translation of 昭和十三戌寅旧節旬吉日. I would have never figured that one out on my own.

I would be grateful for any assistance in translating the attached article, published in November 1944 by 日本語教育振興会 / Nihongo kyōiku shinkō-kai / Japanese Language Education Promotion Association (with ref. to INA Tokyo Cadets thread)

Thanks

Hi,

I'm wondering about the text on the Japanese soldiers who committed suicide on Betio in November 1943. Did anyone ever translate the text? I'm not cognizant enough to know if it's a unit patch or their names.

Thanks
Scotisle

Even the original photo on the National Archives is not quite clear enough to read their patches fully. The center appears to be their surname and the left column their enlistment numbers. The petty officer on the left's name appears to end with the kanji 保, perhaps his name was 久保. I don't think there is a complete roster for the IJN garrison at Tarawa so it would be hard to figure out exactly who they were. Most of the armed troops came from the 3rd Special Base Force and Sasebo 7th SNLF. I think these men pictured belonged to the Sasebo 7th SNLF.

Some people will take offense at such images being posted but I think photos like this are important to be seen. This is what war actually looked like. Many people just think of cool weapons and uniforms when they think of SNLF, for me, images of men like these that never made it home are ingrained in my mind.

Apologies for offense. I think of war as destructive, and am very used to such images. I feel sad for such men who felt no way out except for suicide. I think seeing these images helps us to understand the true cost of war.
