Hi Bill,

Thank you very much for sharing your expertise here.
The SA-photo numbers would also have been nice.

No problem.

Hi Guys:

Max first.......... Your identities are all correct. The unknown car is most likely a 1936 Chrysler Airstream, a photo is below.

And again:

Juha:

I don't want to write a book, but some explanation of my methods may be helpful in understanding how my posts even get on a Forum like this.

I am just weeks away from my 75th Birthday. This means I went through all of my youth and most of my adult years without the use of computers.
I started using business to business computers in the late 1980s and got my first PC in the mid 1990s. My business fields of interest were always
in Marketing and Sales Promotion even including when I had my own business from 1992 to 2012. During most of the time up to 1992, I always had a Secretary and I didn't even know how to type!

I have been collecting materiel on all aspects of automotive history since 1955, for many years only on softskin military vehicles and in the past several years I have concentrated on collecting photos and information on US brand vehicles sold to, assembled in or manufactured in countries outside the US.

Up to 1995, this collection consisted of only "paper" materiels. Books, magazines, photos, brochures etc. Since 1995, virtually all of my collecting has been done off the Internet. Forums, corporate websites, Photobucket,Flicker, city, state and national archive websites and so on.

This has resulted in a photo archive of some 50.000 images and it is very, very disorganized. I am a complete Computer Klutz and what I have
managed to figure out in terms of downloading photos and webpages I have learned by trial and error , not from the downloaded documentation that you have to use today that was written by Computer Geeks who assume you know the first 20 steps or so regarding how to make a computer do something. With me, you always have to start with "Where is the On-Off switch".

All but a few of those hundreds or perhaps thousands of computer icons that indicate a function, instruction or whatever mean absolutely nothing to me. It is just like in my 2010 Ford Taurus, I cannot make the cooling heating system work without looking in the owner's handbook and to make the navigation system work is almost impossible.

To come now to SA-Kuva, I tried many, many times to do searches using both English and Finnish words as search criteria. Not much luck.
Last year, I stumbled upon a different way to look at SA-Kuva and I have pasted that page below. Basically, it is a presentation of all of the tens of thousands of images on their site from #1 to the last #. It presents 200 images per setting the way I have it set up.

I worked very diligently on the site up until about last December when I got involved in some other projects. I am right now on image 8.800
and probably have 120.000 more to go through. You can spend 2 hours on the site and not find one vehicle photo, but..........

Two things are important here. Firstly, I found hundreds of vehicle photos that I would never have found using the normal criteria as the word car, truck, vehicle, Ford, Chevrolet etc. etc. do not appear in the description which is what the search engine looks for. A given photo may have a description of a specific road or a bombing incident or a person but no mention of a vehicle and there is a perfect photo of a 1939 Chevrolet or something like that.
Unfortunately, and I am truly sorry for this, it seems that using that method does not include the SA-Kuva photo number when I save it and even the number in the photo description does not seem to be the same as their number. I don't know how to solve this.

What I will try to do from now on as I save new photos going forward is to add some information about "where" and "when" the photo was taken and any other important items. I will also try to fix the issue of my photo captions so they show up on the thread.

One other thing, it should be noted that there are at least 10 threads on this sub-forum dealing with various aspects of soft skin vehicles in Finland during the 1935-1945 period. I am not trying to take anything away from those threads, I am merely trying to put up here all the photos I have found so that they are preserved somewhere else than in my own documents file. I ain't gonna live forever and my wife has absolutely no interest in my research hobby. If I go suddenly, I will bet my two PCs will go to the recycling dump.

Well, I did write a book. Sorry, Juha, but I wanted to try to explain why you see what you see here.

Bill, when you upload an SA picture, its number will given in the file name, e.g. while searching a picture of Mannerheim´car I use "mannerheim and auto" as search criteria. If you pick up the 1st hit an upload it, it will be saved on your computer with its SA number, "92947.jpg". Later on you can add info into the file name, e.g."92947 Mannerheims Steyr at Aanislinna 1942-06-21.jpg". The important thing is NEVER TO LOOSE THE SA NUMBER, because thereafter it´s more or less impossible to find at SA. There´s no way in hell I could find your e.g. "volvo finland 0115.jpg" in original format at SA.

If you have problen with the Finnish picture captions, just copy and post them beside the picture here at AHF. It´s a bit frustrating for the resindent Finns to search after the original at SA after seeing the picture here. In 92947´s case the original text "Sotamarsalkka Mannerheim tutustumiskäynnillä Äänislinnassa: Marsalkan auto hallintoaukealla. Äänislinna 1942.06.21." can be translated "Fieldmarshall Mannerheim visiting Äänislinna, car on the governmental square. Äänislinna 1942.06.21."

I hope this helps, keep up the good work.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your post.
Well, what I ment, was that the SA-photo numbers would just be a bonus for us in addition to your great identification work here.

Thanks, Bill. I should have recognized those distinctive fender skirts.

Yup, that was the key ID point. There was a chance it was also a DeSoto, but I know of none imported to Finland and the hood louvers are a bit different.

Please keep additional photos coming.

OK. Mina Killar:

By clicking on various icons and assorted other Billy Murray magic, I think I have found a solution to presenting trucks and cars here
with a reasonable description from me in English and the SA-Kuva photo reference number as well which will let you access
the Finnish language photo caption. The SA-Kuva photo reference is in the photo description "Sak xxxxxx". Just go back to the website and type in that reference number in the search field.

I don't like to put too many words here, but what I am going to do is start again from the very first image on SA-Kuva and work
my way through to the last one. The way I access this source gives me a presentation that lets me view 200 pages of 15 images at a time, or, 3.000 images per presentation. When I am finished with one segment, I go to the next 200. Depending on how many photos I find in any given
segment, it takes me 30-60 minutes to go through each one. So, somewhere between 30-40 hours so it will take a while to get to the end.

There will be some duplication because you cannot edit posts older than two days and I don't have the time to try to recall what I have already posted.
I hope you can accept that.

I also need to tell you that I do not save any armour, trailers, tractors, aviation, naval or weapons photos. Only softskins, and I am very selective on those.
I try to only save good, clear shots. If there are 3 photos of the same vehicle, I save 1, the best one.

Lets see how it goes from here.
