Marco Polo Bridge at present

Post by RJcccc » 06 Feb 2007 15:12

I think, it is a little droll to hear this English translation-name of the bridge. In fact, we, Chinese, call this bridge Lugou Bridge.
There was a photo taken by my father in Nov. last year in this place.

R.J.

Do you know which stelae that is?

http://www.china.org.cn/english/feature ... /31253.htm
At the extremes of the bridge there are two stone stelae, one recording the history of the renovation work carried out in the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), and the other bearing the inscription "The Moon over the Lugou Bridge at Dawn" in the handwriting of Emperor Qianlong.

Peter

My understanding of these events(please correct me if I'm wrong):

North China Incident July/August 1937

JULY 8-11 1937:three day clash at Marco Polo Bridge(Lukouchiao),20 miles south of Peking. An armistice was negotiated by the local commanders on the 11th.This then held for about 3 weeks in that area.

JULY 10--Japanese decision to send reinforcements to North China. This included 3 divisions from Japan proper.Sugiyama tells Hirohito,"even if war with China came..it could be finished within two or three months.."

JULY 25--clashes at Langfan,near Tienstin.

JULY 26--clash at Kuang'an Gate,Peking

JULY 27--Imperial order--"chastise the Chinese army in the Peking-Tienstin area--bring stability to the main strategic places in that region".

JULY 29--Japanese occupy Peking and Tienstin.

JULY 30--Tungchow massacre/Tongzhou Incident("a second Nikolaevsk') ; http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=71169

The Japanese ignored their own provoacation in causing this massacre and some sectors called for retribution.

Diary of Prince Takamatsu,2nd August:

"..the mood of the army today is that we're really going to smash China so that it will be ten years before they can stand up straight again".
