Gothard-

Do you happen to know the record group and file location at NARA for this document? I live nearby NARA and would like to get a copy. Thanks!

Hello Alex,
This is what Werner Haupt has in his book Army Group North; The Wehrmacht in Russia 1941-1945, pages 39-40. I will qoute the relevant paragraphs:
'The assault on Riga began on the morning of 6/29 at 0310 hours. In spite of enemy resistance, the three march groups stormed into the Latvian capital.
The lead elements of the group - five assault guns of the 3./185th Assault Gun Battalion under Lieutenant Colonel Geissler, three air defense guns, one 3.7 cm anti-tank gun, one group of the 10th Company of the 43rd Infantry Regiment, and a group of engineers from the 43rd Infantry regiment - rushed over the 600 meter long railroad bridge, taking the enemy bank... then the bridge was blown into the air behind them. The follow-on combat group (Major Helbig) could not close with them. They had to set up a hasty defense of their side of the Deuna.
Then the Soviets attacked. It was elements of the 10th, 11th and 90th Security Divisions, which now placed Colonel Lasch's advanced soldiers in a critical situation. The isolated German combat group repulsed the fierce Soviet counterattack. 9 officers and 82 non-commissioned officers and men fell in the street battle in Riga.
Then elements of the I Army Corps, 5th Battalion of the 61st Infantry Division (Lieutenant General Hänicke) and elements of the 667th Engineer Regiment (Colonel Ullersperger) reached the Duena. During the night of 7/1, the engineers crossed the river in assault boats and ferries.
There were no enemy forces in the city. The Soviets had evacuated Riga during the night.'
From this I would say it was a mix of units from the 1st Infantry Division (43rd Infantry Regiment) and the 61st Infantry Division (162nd Infantry Regiment). Like Gothard said, the Army Group North war diary probably has the actual breakdown of units. I have some Army Group North microfilm records, but not the war diary. I can find which reel number it is on, however, as I have the guide book for the microfilm rolls. I'll post that later.

Hope this helps, Bill

Post by William Russ » 08 Apr 2007, 20:53

Hi All,
As promised, here is the microfilm info. The Army Group North war diary is on series T311/ roll number 53/ frames 7065769-7066098. It would be worth looking at the I Army Corps war diary also to back up what is in the Army Group North diary. It is; T314/39/681-1046. Maybe Karte can look for you?

Hope this helps, Bill

A small case study of AOK 18's daily reported losses in June 1941:

Sources: The operational descriptions are taken from the Tagesmeldungen der Opereations-Abteilung des GenStdH (reproduced in KTB OKW bd.1, p. 490 to 502. The loss figures are taken from the daily Verlustmeldungen of AOK 18, which can be found in RH19-III/507.

In ALL 508

Presumably in the evening of the 24th, a report was worked out which gave an overall view of the losses during the first three days of the campaign. This gave a total of 438 KIA, 1,198 WIA and 97 MIA, for a total of 1,733. That however did not include losses of AK I on the 24th, or of 11.ID on the 23rd. If we add these as they emerge from the previously quoted reports, the total is 2,119. The sum of the three daily reports is 2,187, so it seems likely that some downwards adjustments had been made.

25 June

HG Nord continued to advance northeastwards against what is described as a zäh und hinterlistig kämpfenden Feind. The Russian air force was more active than previously, with repeated attacks made. AOK 18 captured 40 light tanks, 4 guns and 4 flak guns. I AK reached a point 6 km NW of Kelme, XXVI AK SE of Zarenai, with elements in Plunge.

Here we for the first time see the daily mechanism of adjustments in loss reporting in play. 21.ID initially reports 15 casualties, including 9 missing. Later in the same day, it corrects that report, stating that 6 of the 9 missing soldiers had been recovered. It also reports 30 dead and 124 not included in the first report, presumably due to hectic activity.

26 June

AOK 18 continued to adance northeast against tough enemy opposition. I AK stood on both sides of Schadow, with lwading elements at Sereikiai (16km NW of Schadow), XXVI AK on both sides of Raudenai, XXXVIII AK at Uzoentis, 291.ID unchanged.

IN ALL 845

Here we again see the mechanism of adjustment. 291.ID, which obviously had a rough day as it suffered by far the greatest losses any division of the army had so far incurred in a single day, was not in a position to report on time, and it (and its attached units, which also suffered heavily) could only do so later. 21.ID again made an adjustment to its previously reported figures, as it stated in its Nachmeldung that of 4 officers reported wounded in its first report, only 1 was actually wounded.

27 June

AOK 18 attacked retreating russian forces, supported by Luftflotte 1. I AK reached the line Staciunai-Joneskes, XXVI AK Gruzdziai-Tnyskiai, 291.ID immediately east of Libau and around Durben and Prekuln.

In 58.ID, one officer reported missing were in fact dead, and 3 of the 6 men and NCOs reported missing had been recovered. 1 Officer reported Missing in 291.ID were corrected to killed.

This underlines the importance of taking into account Nachmeldungen when working with these reports. The original report understates AOK 18 losses by roughly a quarter.

June 29

Elements of the Army were now in Riga, engaged in intensive fighting in the southern part of the city, particularly around the railway bridge. Further elements were closing in on the city. I AK had reached the line Krincinas-Bausk, XXVI AK spearheads some 15 km south of Mitau, parts of I and XXVI AK around Riga, 291.ID with main mass in Liepaja, elements in Prekuln, lead elements marching East, having reached Skrunda.
