Wirth and Herring

Postby Eddy Marz » 02 Apr 2007 18:20

A bad picture, but it's them alright : Christian Wirth (left) & Gottlieb Herring, apparently in Lublin, circa 1942 (pic gets better if you reduce it)

Great. Thank you Max. By the way, Wirth is wearing Stubaf uniform, that would be december 42 at the earliest but more likely 43 ? What do you think ?

Most probably early 1943.
Here is another photo of Wirth. I don't know the other two.

Max, thanks again for the picture. I have this one as well but of much poorer quality. From what I gather, the Untersturmführer on the right would be a certain 'Lassman' (can't seem to find him anywhere though, and it can't be Erich Lachmann who was just a Scharführer in Sobibor. Any clues about a Lassman ?

Apparently, the officer on the left is Johann Schwarzenbacher. Any details on him ?

Or maybe the officer on the left is Johann Gottfried Schwarz, Untersturmfuhrer, SS Number – 37 768, service in Sobibor (sounds more like it), but then who is Lassman ?

Johann ‘Franz’ Schwarzenbacher.
Born on 3-1-1909 in München.
On 15-11-1932 he joined the SS(nr. 171.669).
On 1-5-1933 he became a member of the NSDAP(nr. 1.930.269).
He started his career as an SS-Unteroffizier and he was stationed within the Staff of the
SSPF in Lublin.
In 1941 he served as a Kompaniekommandeur in the SS-camp at Trawniki.
On 31-1-1942 he was promoted to SS-Untersturmführer.
At that time he was also appointed as commander from the 1st Guard Battalion in Trawniki.
On 19-4-1943 he went with this unit to Warschau and stayed there till 19-6-1943.
In the summer of 1943 he was also commander from the SS-Labor Camp Poniatowa(Poland).
On 9-11-1943 he received the EK I(for his excellent services within Operation Reinhard). At the end of 1943/beginning of 1944 he moved with O. Globocnik to the
SSPF ‘Adriatischen Küstenland’.
On 30-1-1944 he was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer.
At this new post he also served as commander from a Guard Battalion.
He also became commander from an SS-trainingschool in Trieste and in Görz for
SS-men from the SS-Wachmannschaften(Ukranians, Italians, Croats and Slovenen).
He maybe als got promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer.
On 2-6-1944 he and 10 men of his unit were on the way to Trieste and at a certain point they drove into an ambush from Italian partisans. He got wounded on both his legs and he got several shots in the head(most likely a classical case from partisans who were finishing of a wounded target).
Died(KIA)on 2-6-1944 near Trieste(Italy).

Mike

Schwarzenbacher was killed when his motorized column got ambushed by the partisans of the Slovene Southern Coastland Detachment on the road between Senozece [Senosecchia] and Storje [Storie].

Lassmann

Postby itaiv40 » 12 Apr 2007 01:57

The man on the right is Ustuf Jurgen Lassmann (SS # 297-443). He headed the research center ("Forschungsstelle") at the Aktion Reinhard Lublin headquarters. Probably in charge of development, planning and statistics.
