Cremer

Post by Bjørn from Norway » 18 Dec 2002, 19:21

Hello!

About the very famous Uboat commander "Ali" Cremer, I am not sure if he ever got the badge for single-handed tank destruction.
Here is a little on him (uboat.net):

Peter "Ali" Cremer (Uboat commander)
Born on 25 Mar, 1911 in Metz, Lorraine.
Korvettenkapitän (11 Jul, 1944)
Knights Cross winner (25 Jun, 1942)
Died on 5 Jul, 1992, Hamburg.

Korvkpt. Cremer left U-2519 in February 1945. He now became commander of the Marine-Panzervernichtungsbataillon (Naval Tank Destroying Battalion) which fought on land against British tanks attempting to occupy the city of Hamburg.

On 25 April, 1945 the daily Wehrmachtsbericht announced:

"Ein von Korvettenkapitän Cremer geführter Panzervernichtungstrupp der Kriegsmarine, zusammengestellt aus Freiwilligen eines Unterseeboot-Stützpunktes, vernichtete innnerhalb weniger Tage 24 Panzer."
(A navy tank destroying unit under command of Korvettenkapitän Cremer, including volunteers from a U-boat base, destroyed 24 tanks during the last few days.)

In the last days of the war Cremer became commander of Dönitz's guard unit.

I am also uncertain on Porsch.

Hi Björn, check the link to the other discussion about panzerknackers, there's a link there to a picture to Peter Cremer wearing the badge, perhaps it isn't the same man.

As for Porsch I know that there's been big debates regarding his claims.

Hauptmann Peter Kiesgen instructing young Hitlerjugend recruits in handling of the panzerfäuste. Kiesgen served as a company commander in the first company, Infanterie Reg. 239 ( 106 Infanteriedivision) when he was awaarded with the knights cross on the 5th October 1941. In late -43 Kiesgen became an instructor. The photo was taken in October 43, you can clearly see his five silver pz. vern. abz. The photo is courtesy of Michi.

Hi Daniel!
I've just noticed, reading your new list (BTW, great work!!), that you're actually looking only for holders of the tank destruction badge. Now, I don't know if you're aware but several Pz.knackers didn't receive them (due to the final stage of the war)-Fey, Weber, Heuer, Giesler, Appolot and others.

Hello everyoneand thanks for the compliments! I know that the list includes soldiers who actually didn't recieve the badge but should have, I will add notes to these later on, as you can see some of them already has notes. I suspect that the picture of Peter Cremer could be a edited photograph, see for yourself: http://www.btinternet.com/~gordonwillia ... awards.htm

Thanks for the contribution Erik, I will include those men in the next update.

Ä

Ö

# These ones aren't KC holders but were considered as such for sometime, this of course doesn't mean they didn't destroy the number of panzers in question. I guess either the documents about the award don't exist anymore or they just thought they should have received it. Another thing you must understand is that Hitler gave an order to decorate any soldier, who destroyed more then 6 tanks with a Pz.Faust or Pz.Schreck, with KC. ( Mark V's note)

¤ Please note that the list contains names of soldiers who qualified for the badge but didn't recieve it, this has been noted when possible.

A total of 18.541 of the silver and 421 of the gold badges were handed out making a total of 20 646 knocked out tanks.

I apologize for the inconsistency of the list, this will eventually be corrected. Thanks to everyone who has contributed with information to this list. I'm truly grateful for your kind help.

Hi Lillebror, the panzervernichtungsabzeichen also known as the Sonderabzeichen für das Niederkämpfen von Panzerkampfwagen durch Einzelkämpfer was handed out to soldiers who had single- handedly knocked out a enemy tank with a panzerfaust, anti- tank mine, grenade bundle or a similar weapon.

There were indeed privates who were pz. vern. abz. holders. That there are so many officers on the list is mostly due to that many are ritterkreuzträgers, that there exists photographic evidence etc. It's very hard to identify privates in pictures. If you check the first post you'll find a link to another great panzerknacker- discussion which explain more about the badge.

Best regards/ Daniel
