Festung Küstrin 1945

Festung Küstrin

SS-Gruppenführer und Generalleutnant der Polizei Heinrich-Friedrich Reinefarth
2 II 1945 - 30 III 1945

Generalmajor Adolf Raegener
25 I 1945 - 1 II 1945

Bürgermeister Hermann Körner

The garrison numbered 11.000 soldiers and 900 members of the Volkssturm.
More than 5.000 of them were killed during the battle.

Only 32 officers and 965 NCOs and soldiers, including Reinefarth and Körner, reached the German lines during a breakthrough during the night of March 29/30 1945.

The Soviets (mainly the 82nd Guards Rifle Division of Guards Major General Gieorgiy Ivanovitch Khietagurov) lost 6.000 KIA and 12.000 WIA during the battle. Moreover, 40 Soviet aircraft was shot down.

A precise order of battle of the German garrison will be the most welcome.

Regards!

The Volkssturm units fighting in the city were part of the Volkssturm Bataillon 16/186.

A platoon from 2./Panzer-Abteilung Müncheberg was deployed at Alt Bleyen on 22 March, and was subsequently cut off and incorporated in the fortress when the Soviets sealed the pocket. They had Pz IVs and/or StuGs. Source: Zhokov at the Oder - Tony Le Tissier.
