Know of any books about NKVD war crimes ?? (except Katyn)
Know of any books about NKVD war crimes ?? (except Katyn)
I've seen 2 or 3 documentaries in the last few years about Soviet forced re-location of populations of parts of the old USSR, a massacre of several thousand (possibly monks ?) and suppression of Ukrainian population with hundreds shot by NKVD. Its not denied that they were equally murderous as the Gestapo but there doesnt seem to be much in print.
Has anybody seen any books covering the subject ?
cheers

Regarding the NKVD prison massacres in Eastern Poland/Western Ukraine in 1941, there’s the book by Dr. Bogdan Musial mentioned in my post of Mon Dec 16, 2002 9:24 pm on the threadIltis wrote:I've seen 2 or 3 documentaries in the last few years about Soviet forced re-location of populations of parts of the old USSR, a massacre of several thousand (possibly monks ?) and suppression of Ukrainian population with hundreds shot by NKVD. I haven’t read the book, but I liked an article by Musial based on this book, the translation of which can be found in my post of Tue Nov 26, 2002 12:25 pm on the thread

RE: Know of any book about N.K.V.D. war crimes?
Greetings to both citizen Iltis and the community as a whole. When the time avails itself, you might want to peruse the following work of literature. It is entitled as STALIN'S SECRET WAR: A startling expose of his crimes against the Russian people. The author is Nikolai Tolstoy and the publisher is Holt, Rinehart and Winston of New York. The year of publication is 1981. This particular work does touch on selected activities of the Narodny Komissariat Vnutrennikh Del during the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union. I hope you find this work to be relevant to your interests. In anycase, I bid you a very good day over in merry old England.
Best Regards,
Uncle Bob

There is something in "the last frontier"from Alistair Maclean about a NKVD massacre at Vinnitsa ,for those accepting a novel as a source .

A good start for beginners would be Alfred Maurice de Zayas's The Wehrmacht War Crimes Bureau 1939-1945. (The German Edition had more cases examination)
For those who could read German, Professor Franz W. Siedler wrote two volumes on Soviet/NKVD war crimes, Vebrechen an der Wehrmacht (Band I) and Kriegsgreuel der Roten Armee 1942/1943 (Band II)
Professor Jeffrey Burds of Northeastern University wrote a couple of excellent articles documentating NKVD brutality against UPA as well as Ukrainian civilians
- Agentura: Soviet Informants Network & Ukrainian underground in Galicia 1944-48
- Gender & Policing in Soviet West Ukraine 1944-48
- The Soviet War against 'Fifth Columnists', The Case of Chechnya, 1942-44
- Sexual Violence in Europe in World War II, 1939-1945
