It's odd. I grew up, unsuspecting, only 20 minutes drive away from a deported Nazi war criminal. I'm just reading about it now, and I know exactly where he lived.

It makes my innocent life growing up a bit tainted. And it is odd that the German Nazi would choose to live in a predominantly Jewish area, but I have heard of that one before , too.

It looks like Nazi hunting has come to an end. The youngest Nazi on the list is 87 years old. :|

Martin Sandberger is supposedly alive, at 99.

NYT, May 1987

“Mr. Tannenbaum declined to be interviewed for this article due to poor health and emotional distress. But both Sonny Tannenbaum and Mr. Massel maintain the man's innocence.

As they recount the story, Jacob Tannenbaum was a young conscript in the Polish Army when he was sent to the first of three concentration camps in 1942. He was later transferred along with other relatively healthy prisoners to the forced-labor camp at Wola in Galicia. There, they say, Mr. Tannenbaum's Nazi captors blinded him in one eye and severly injured his back during a beating. Finally, for eight months of 1944 and 1945, Mr. Tannenbaum served as a kapo in Gorlitz, supervising some of the 1,000 prisoners who worked in an armaments factory.”

''I know that when the Tannenbaum case is heard, many of the allegations will be horrifying,'' said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, which studies the Holocaust and human rights issues. ''What needs to be said generally is that one must make a distinction between those who volunteered for the SS or the Gestapo and those who thought they would save their lives by cooperating. You can't say Patty Hearst played the same role as her kidnappers. The same is true of any kapo.'' 'Sad and Tragic'

''Any inquiry like this, Jewish or German, comes down to whether someone took part in the persecution of innocent people willingly and voluntarily,'' said Mr. Ryan, a former director of the Office of Special Investigations and now a lawyer for Harvard University. ''It's just that with the kapos you have to add the additional layer of what the SS was doing over their shoulders. Were the kapos beating the inmates only enough to keep the SS from beating them even more brutally? Or were they persecuting them as badly or even worse than the SS?''

''This is not a case brought simply because Mr. Tannenbaum served as a kapo,'' said Neal M. Scher, the director of the Office of Special Investigations. ''This was brought because he engaged in physical violence against inmates. It is based on a brutality that was unwarranted by any standard.''
David Thompson wrote:OSI began denaturalization proceedings 12 May 1987 (NYT 12 May 1987:II:3:5; NYT 26 May 1987:II:1:2); voluntarily relinquished US citizenship after admitting he beat Jewish prisoners 4 Feb 1988 (NYT 5 Feb 1988:II:1:2);

Newsday, Feb 5, 1988

“The government agreed not to press for deportation because it might endanger Tannenbaum's life.”

Demjanjuk, Iwan Nicolaievich "John" (1920-?)
I have serious doubts about the case against Demjanjuk. The Israeli Supreme Court, no less, found the evidence that Demjanjuk was Ivan the Terrible so weak and contradictory that they voided the guilty judgment of the trial court and ordered him released.

The alleged eyewitnesses were dubious and suspect. One of them was clearly senile. Another was thoroughly impeached as a liar--he had earlier claimed, in writing, that he had seen Ivan the Terrible die. Another had repeatedly identified the photo of other men, not Demjanjuk, when asked to pick Ivan the Terrible out of a group of pictures.

If the evidence against Demjanjuk were solid and established guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, I would say execute him or throw him in solitary confinement with no chance for parole. But the evidence that Demjanjuk is Ivan the Terrible is very questionable, and some of it appears to have been forged.
