Post by Igor Starikow » 07 Jul 2007 04:39

Dear forum members!

I am looking for some information about Vizeadmiral and Pour-le-Merite-Winner Andreas Michelsen. Does anyone have a complete list of his awards and decorations? Any info about his assignments and promotions will be very useful. Perhaps somebody has a picture of him?

I find next Info about him from search sources:
Born: 19.02.1869 in Hildesheim
Died: 08.04.1932 in Fallingbostel
Ranks: Konteradmiral (29.11.1919), Vizeadmiral (21.01.1920).
Decorations & Awards: Pour le merite (31.05.1918).

Thanks
Igor

Michelsen's Honor Rank List entry. The second column is "dittos" for his date of entering service (4.1888) and date of last promotion before war's end (1.1.1911 to Käpt. z.S.). Third column is wartime assignments. Last is postwar notes.

I. Führer der Torpedoboote was his title. He then became commander of U-boats. Prior to becoming 1.Fhr. d. Torpedoboote, he was Chief of Staff to the commander of reconnaissance ships in the eastern Baltic (Befehlshaber der Aufklärungsschiffe in der östlichen Ostsee). Before that he was simultaneously a lecturer at the War Academy, Präfes (whatever that is) of the Torpedoversuchskommando, and commander of the cruiser SMS Friedrich Carl.

I assume there's something missing between 11.14 and 7.15, when he went to the B.d.A.d.O., since the Friedrich Carl sank on November 17, 1914 after hitting a Russian mine.

Michelsen's prewar non-German awards were the Royal Victorian Order from Great Britain and the Order of the Star of Romania.

Many Thanks for your helps, dear Dave Danner and Peter H!!!

As I understand, Andreas Michelsen was promoted to Seekadett in 4.1888 and to Kapitan zur See in 1.1.1911. Acording to some sources (u-boot-net) in 1914 he was Fregattenkapitan and during the War was promoted to Kapitan zur See. And when Michelsen became Leutnant zur See, Oberleutnant zur See, Kapitanleutnant und Korvettenkapitan?

Im sorry I can`t understand the list of decorations, espatially the first and second rows. Am I right?
#1 - Kgl. Preuss. Kronen-Orden IV. Klasse mit Schwertern
#2 - Kgl. Preuss. Rote Adler Orden III. Klasse
#3 - ?
#4 - RK des Kgl. Preuss. Hausordens von Hohenzollern mit Schwertern
#5 - EK I & II
#6 - Kgl. Bayer. Militar-Verdienstorden IV. Klasse mit der Krone und Schwertern
#7 - MG3 - ?
#8 - Ehrenritterkreuz I. Klasse des Grossherzoglich Oldenburgischen Haus- und Verdienstordens des Herzogs Peter Friedrich Ludwig
#9 - Ritterkreuz des Kgl. Sachs. Albrechts Orden II. Klasse mit Schwertern

In photo of Vizeadmiral Michelsen from http://www.ubootehrenmal.de/de/index.htm we can see more than 12 decorations, but this photo so small.

Thanks. Sorry for my English.
Igor

#7 - RK des Grossh. Mecklenb. Greifenordens
#8 - Grossh. Oldenb. Friedrich-August-Kreuz I & II
#9 - Komturkreuz II. Klasse des Kgl. Sachs. Albrechts-Ordens mit Schwertern

#3 and #9 were neck badges, worn below the Pour le Merite. Michelsen would have also had the Centenary Medal, Prussian 25-year long service cross, and probably others.
