Joerchel was commander of 48th regiment "General Seyffardt", when the Red Army fiercely attacked the Narwa-Brückenkopf in March 1944. At that time, the regiment was part of the Brigade "Nederland", and not, as mentioned above, the Division "Nederland". I can further add that he left the 48th regiment a couple of days before the retreat from Narva. By then, Benner took over the command of the regiment.

With kind regards,

Cees

Hello to all,
regarding Stdf.Wolfgang Joerchel I rather be allmost certain, that he was lynched by the mob.In those days, the Chechs
killed everbody, smelled german, even a german shepherd.I just happen to drop a line about this .Have a look at my posting"The raid on the Gleiwitz sender" Myself I was in Prag those horrible days,my rank was Standartenfuehrer, just as
Joerchel and I am happy to made my way out of Prag, because they did´t asked if you are a "warcriminal" if you are german you were guilty,no matter what rank you had. While I make my way through the Boehmerwald, towards Bavaria,
allways alone, with only a pistol 08 and using only the night for walking,I saw from my daily hiding place,a very horrible act which I never will forget as long as I live.Few partisans carring a man together with an horse obviously a german soldier,I could tell because he was wearing a german camouflage dress. He been beaten all the way towards a big tree , then fasten his one leg on the tree and the other leg on the harness of the horse. Then they lashed the horse just ones and the horse jumped and teared the man apart. And I was in my hideout, seing all this and could´t help.Otherwise I wouldt be around .

This as well ,could be a possibility.Suicide, rather then fall in the hand of the mob.But "hingerichtet "sounds quite clean
and corect.Remember his date of dead are reported with the 12. of May.In those days there were no justice at all.

Why were you not with your division (12. SS "Hitlerjugend" according to another topic) at that time?

Wolfgang Joerchel (1907–1945) was a Standartenführer in the Waffen SS during World War II. Who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany during World War II.Wolfgng Roman Christian Theodor Joerchel was born on 9 August 1907, in Zabrzein Silesia, his father was a Leutnant in the army who was killed in action near Tarnawka on the Eastern Front in 1914. After he completed his secondary school education he went onto study the Russian language at the university of Breslau. In May 1934, he became a sports leader in the Hitler Youth and also joined the SA remaining a active member until June 1935, when he left only to later join the SS-VT in October 1935, with the rank of Obersturmführer. He was posted to the SS-Junkerschule at Bad Tölz in 1937, as an Machine Gun instructor and then joined the SS Standarte (Regiment) Deutschland and participated in the Anschluss of Austria and the occupation of the Sudetenland in 1938. In World War II he was in the SS Standarte Germania during the Polish Campaign where her was awarded the Iron Cross II class, his Iron Cross I class was awarded in the Battle of France. In December 1940, he was given command of the II/Battalion, SS Germania. For his actions during the Battle for Narva Bridgehead; After a feint attack towards Nordland's positions, the Russian commander directed his forces at the General Seyffardt regiment, holding the centre of the line. The regiment was forced from its positions, but a counterattack led by regimental commander SS-Standartenführer Wolfgang Jörchel retook the defensive works and averted a Soviet breakthrough. His final command was the SS-Junkerschule in Prague in May 1945, where he was captured by the liberated Czechs and executed on the 12 May 1945.

According to his wife Joerchel remained in Prague and shot himself, she told his last words on the phone were "they are coming, I am going to finish it right now".
