FJ landing in Albania?

Post by Felix » 25 Aug 2007 21:48

I have read several books that state the Germany dropped Paratroopers on Tirana in 1943 as the Italians pulled out to prevent Tirana falling to the Partisans. is this true? are their any accounts of this operation?

Yep, it is true, Germany occupied Albania in September 1943, dropping paratroopers into Tirana before the Albanian Partisans could take the capital, the German army were able to drove the Partisans into the hills and to the south. Berlin subsequently announced it would recognize the independence of Albania, they gained popular support by backing causes popular with Albanians, especially the annexation of Kosovo!

I am also looking for a more info about the military operation.

Is it just me or were the Germans better at short-notice "ad hoc" parachute drops than the Allies? reading around there's quite a lot of these smaller operations...whereas in Britain the number of parachute operations (as opposed to clandestine "special forces") can almost be counted on two hands....? And with cancelled ops outnumbering the operational ones.

I think they were members of Fallschirmschule III ,the training school set up at Mataruska Banja,Serbia to train the Waffen-SS Parachute Battalion in 1943/1944.Two improvished companies, the 2nd and 4th battled the Albanian partisans.Leutnant Horst Dencker, commander of the 2nd Company was killed near Cruja leading his unit.

German Airborne Divisions:Mediterranean Theatre 1942-45 by Bruce Quarrie mentions the decentralisation of the Fallschirmschule from 1942.

Fallschirmschule III moved to the Balkans in early 1943 from Braunschweig.Major.Erich Schultz commanded the school in 1943.I think they trained Hungarian and Bulgarian FJs plus later SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500 .
