both the result of a google search... the second photo also appearing in Krätschmer's book "Ritterkreuzträger der Waffen-SS".

Hm, could it be that there are files about him in the Staatsarchiv Bremen?

My source for the quote, which Mike mentions above, is Ralf Tiemann's book on the 7./SS-PR 1. A report on page 149 of the English edition indicates that Malkomes was shot by a sniper in Varpalota during the night of March 20-21. The Germans had fired flares to avoid being shot at by their own side, and this gave enough light for a sniper to shoot Malkomes in the head as he looked around just above his cupola.Since the operation in Varpalota began just before midnight, and Malkomes was shot sometime later, I felt comfortable giving "March 21, 1945" as the date of his death, even though Scneider and Krätschmer list his death as "April 1945."

Here is something that you might find useful about SS-Hauptsturmführer Hans Malkomes. I received this from my grandfather (6.later 7./II./LAH), which came from the HIAG.
