The "G" letter at frontplate of vehicles
The "G" letter at frontplate of vehicles
Hallo,
have you any idea about the "G" letter at frontplate of this Kingtiger wreck (509.sPzAbt) ?
I saw the "G" letter at few other vehicles, like Jagdpanther in Normandy etc, but I don't know what it means.

Hello
Actually the link DO provide the answer - at least i think so
G = "Division Grossdeutschland"
But I rather think this explanation is the correct one, that is also mentioned in the above link.:
Panzergruppe Guderian / G = Guderian.

Are you sure if Panzergruppe Guderian still exist in 1944 and later? I think not.kstdk wrote:Panzergruppe Guderian / G = Guderian.
This Koenigstiger wreck with "G" letter was from 509.sPzAbt, received in December 1944, destroyed in May 1945 in Znaim area (Czechoslovakia).
Insignia of Division Grossdeutschland was "GD", not "G" only. 509.sPzAbt never been part of GD.kstdk wrote:G = "Division Grossdeutschland"

Hello
Fact is that the "G" on the front glacis of some tanks is still a mistery.
As said above Panzergruppe Guderian and/or Grossdeutschland is incorrect because at the time these show uü PGr Guderian did not exist and there are also photos from the west where GD never was.
One theory is that it means that the tank is run with a cooling fluid "Glysantin" which could be important to all maintenance personnel as it cannot be mixed with other products. But this is just a theory as well and has also not been confirmed as I can remember.

the german PanzerGruppe 2 had the tactical badge "G", since 1940 but it wasn't stationed in Westeurope and the PGD Großdeutschland had a white or a yellow Stahlhelm as badge on their vehicles!
I think the theory "Glysantin" isn't correct, because the "G" is on the front and not at the filler cap, where normaly stood those informations!

It could be the initial of a local scrap merchant or the like if it is in a country where they use the Roman alphabet.JirkaS wrote:This wreck is from soviet battlefront area - russians have not "G" letter in his alphabetSvenHarder wrote:could it be that it is a marking by the allys for a wreck?

G=glysantin
G= glysantin
While this is not a subject I'm very familiar with, I understand the most logical theory at this time is the G stands for glysantin indeed, and the G was painted on the front of the vehicle to indicate it was 'protected' with this stuff and should get priority on roads over other vehicles that were not protected.....
