Coast Guardsmen, all veterans of the beach patrols conducted along the shores of the U.S., were sent to China to train Chinese military personnel in the handling of dogs and horses. They operated near Chunking. The photo's original caption noted: "The Coast Guardsmen taught their eager Chinese students how to use war dogs for sentry duty and horses for patrol work to secure their positions against infiltration by the enemy. The twenty Coast Guard instructors were flown over the hump to assist our allies in guarding installations. In the foreground, left, is Coast Guard LT. COMDR. Clayton Snyder, of Hume, VA., who was in charge of the training program."
