Hellow J.-H.,

sorry for the late reply but the flu got to me first... Still researching the good old 2. Pz.-Div., I see :D ... Unfortunately I don't have any info for you on this officer, but while researching the 'dienststellenbesetzungen', I discovered that he was not the only officer of the Pz.-Art.-Regt. 74 to be killed that day...

I've come across Major Max David (again a new first name...), Kdr. III./Pz.-Art.-Regt. 74, who was killed that same day. He is listed in the Volksbund.
I believe they all got killed on the same spot... I've read somewhere that a lot of officers of 2. Pz.-Div. got killed when a shell hit the command post. No details on what unit of the 2. Pz.-Div. it was, sorry... but this points in that direction...

Strangely enough, the command of the Kdr. of the II./Pz.-Art.-Regt. 74, Hauptmann Waetzmann, ended on 20/08/1944. I haven't been able to find him in the Volksbund. Was he also killed or did he went missing? or wounded? or captured? or perhaps his name got wrongefully recorded ? Still a lot of research to do, I am afraid...

PS: Do you perhaps have any contact info on the veteran's association of this Division?

Cheers,

Charles

That is the day the division crossed the Dives River and to breakout of the "Falaise pocket", the crossing site was under heavy artillery fire. Division Kdr., Heinrich v.Luttwitz was also wounded there.
