Mark,

the book is available again published by Verlag K. D. Patzwall, Norderstedt 2000.
I own a copy "Die Auszeichnungen des Großdeutschen Reichs. Orden, Ehrenzeichen, Abzeichen" von Dr. Heinrich Doehle, Unterstaatssekretär in der Präsidialkanzlei des Führers und Reichskanzlers

Thanks, Mark and Dieter !

list updated

two questions left :
older list version :
Erich Purucker
Peter Kuesters
1) does it read "Kusters" or "Küsters" (or "Kuesters") ?

2) what about Erich Purucker ? - added by Phil
would be #20

Yes, but he is the son of the knight ! His father Gustav was the first with the award !
I have corrected the error :)

Mea culpa for the Krupp management :)
I should have asked if it's Gustav or Alfried because the original post by James contained "Gustav" (sorry!).

Another slight correction :
June 28, 1944
Dr. Ing. Albert Peitzsch
reads Pietzsch
detailed essay : Institut für Zeitgeschichte, München ; decorations on page 3 :
http://www.ifz-muenchen.de/archiv/ed_0458.pdf

Is it true that we are re-checking and slightly correcting a de facto primary source like the Doehle ?
Oh Yes, this project will bring a lot more fun I guess :)

Adlerschild des Deutsches Reiches ( Eagle Shield of Germany )
[nichttragbare, höchste Zivilauszeichnung / non-portable award]

is covered already on the Factbook with an excellent article (incl. list of recipients) by our dear colleague Matt Gibbs :
http://www.axishistory.com/index.php?id=4444

complete list of all the recipients of the ”Adlerschild des Deutschen Reiches“ with biographical data as addendum by Dieter Zinke on page 6

Awarded in total : 59 (1922 - 1944)
Weimarer Republik : 19
Drittes Reich : 40

Essay by Wolfgang Steguweit in German

Two points of special interest / further research :
these two points have been solved / see link above [by Dieter], resp. page 6 / april 2008 / Bernd
1) Any info on two possible further recipients (not confirmed) is much appreciated.
Footnote. It is also possible that there were two further recipients and I have received correspondence regarding this from the Deutsches Museum. The names of these ‘possibles’ are:

Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer – my research leads me to think he may have received it for his contributions to literature and drama. However, he does not fit the age criteria of the original award and was not on the lists I had seen previously. He received several other awards of this time period. One university biography lists him as receiving the following:

Goethemedaille 1932
Goethepreis der Stadt Frankfurt 1937
"Adlerschild" des Deutschen Reiches 1938 or possibly 1943
Kant-Plakette der Stadt Königsberg 1941
Grillparzer-Preis der Stadt Wien 1944
Josef-Hofmann-Plakette 1958

Wilhelm Kreis – Architect who was responsible for design of monuments and memorials for war dead, nominally under the direction of Speer but working for the German government. He also designed and built the main station in Meissen and the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden and planned the Gau Forum in Dresden, which was not built due to the outcome of the war. Possible recipient in 1942, unconfirmed.
2) Several online resources are stating that Henry Ford did receive the award.
This should be a mistake - meant is the award of the German Eagle Order in july 1938 (75th birthday).
To put this straight, it would be nice, if we could have the date of award and the grade of the DAO for Ford.

Henry Fords award was presented to him on his 75th birthday, 30th July 1938, as far as I know by the German Ambassador, representing AH.
It is recorded in the local Dearborn newspaper, owned by Ford and presumably therefore pretty accurate where their boss was concerned, as the Grand Cross of the Order. Hope this is of use.

With regard to the Eagle Shield [and thanks for commenting and remembering it!] I have copies of photographs of virtually all the shields awarded with their inscriptions, but since the detail is already on the site probably not needed.
Regards
MG

Hi Matt,

You are correct about Ford. I believe I saw a photo of him wearing the award with sash in Angolia's For Fuhrer and Fatherland many years ago when I used to own a copy. I also read that he was admired by Hitler for the anit-semetic book he had written about the Jewish people so I wonder if that helped influence his receiving the award or if it was just for his accomplishments as a car manufacturer.

Best,

James

James
I believe in the late 20s and early 30s Hitler admired Ford for the mass production skills and theories he brought into big buisness. Probably more to do with this, though who knows.
