OTL i.G./ Bw-General Jürgen Bennecke
OTL i.G./ Bw-General Jürgen Bennecke
This is my first post to this forum.
I am attempting to find out more about Gen. Jürgen Benneke. He is shown on the list above as having the Iron Cross, 1st Class (forgive me if I am mis-classifying it).
I once had the honor of meeting him when he was Chief of Nato forces, on official visit to the U.S. I understood he commanded an Infantry Division during WWII and would like to find out which one and possibly where that unit was.
I appreciate any information you could give me.

Hello Woolno!
Jürgen Bennecke recieved the DKiG (German Cross in Gold) on 31.01.1945 as an Oberstleutnant i.G. in the 100. Jäger-Division. This is an higher award and ranks between the Iron Cross, 1st Class and the Knight's Cross.
And about the whereabouts and deeds of the 100. Jäger-Division, see the following link...

Dear Krollspell
Thank you for your reply. I had not realized there was the gold cross. I knew of the Knights Cross and Jewels and have even seen Adolf Galland's on display in Az. I have always thought the American Congressional Medal of Honor should be worn like the Iron Cross (1st class and above) in what we call "Class A" uniform (greens for the Army), instead of the ribbon version with all the other ribbons.
I had originally been told that he was Division Commander, but your note shows him as winning the cross in January 1945 as a Lt. Col. Since the war was over (in Europe) in April, I guess it is doubtful he made general in that time.
Thanks for the site. Although my German is not really up to a full translation, it looks like the division spent the whole war in the Balkins.
My father was a regimental commander in WWII in Europe and was in the Battle of the Bulge and at Remagen (sp). I was an army helicopter pilot during Viet Nam.
Best Regards,
Ken

Hello Ken!
After searching, albeit very quickly, on the Net I found a Wikipedia reference on that Bennecke's last wartime position was that of acting First Generalstaboffizier, Ia, in Heeresgruppe "Mitte", see link...

I just found that Jürgen Bennecke was one of the very few recipients of both the DKiG and the DKiS (German Cross in Silver). Bennecke recieved the DkiS on 15.02.1943 as a Major i.G. with the Ob.Kdo. HGru 8.
Does anyone have a, or know of a wartime photograph of Jürgen Bennecke showing both the German Crosses?
Regards,
Krollspell
