Using umbrellas for camouflage?!

Not sure I have seen anything like that elsewhere, but here is a photo of Chinese troops (belong to the 29th Corps) using an umbrella for camouflage. It was published originally by the Illustrated London News in Aug 14, 1937.

Another photo of these troops from the same source. The reports claimed that the troops used them as camouflage against Japanese airplanes as well! Umbrellas vs planes - what an uneven fight.
