Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
Hello! Does anyone know who was Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes from 1 Feb 1938-1 Feb 1939? Hildebrand lists the following:
Major Paul Deichmann, 1 Oct 1936-1 Oct 1937
Generalleutnant Bernhard Kühl, 1 July 1937-1 Feb 1938
UNKNOWN, 1 Feb 1938-1 Feb 1939
Generalleutnant Otto Hoffmann von Waldau, 1 Feb 1939-10 Apr 1942
Also note the dates do not match between Deichmann (did a Major really hold this post?) and Kühl.
Thanks for any help on these questions!
Best regards,
Shawn

Re: Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
I found the first part in Hildebrand:
Oberst Hans Jeschonnek, 1 Feb 1938-1 Feb 1939
Any help with the question of the dates would be most appreciated!

Re: Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
Hi Shawn ... old mate,
as per as 01/Feb/1939 a new Luftwaffe structure was regulated. From this time on the Chef des Gen. St. der Luftwaffe was at the same time Chef Führungsstab. As a matter of evidence I enclose a official document regulating this structure as per as 01/Feb/1939. This is confirmed by Absolon, p. 120 giving the position of Jeschonnek at his promotion to GdF (19/07/1940) as "Chef des Generalstabes der Luftwaffe und Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes".
This structure was only abandoned later in the war. Here is what I have compiled:
Chef des Generalstabes der Luftwaffe:
01.04.1933-31.08.1933: Bohnstedt (Eberhard), Gen. Maj. [Chef Luftschutzamt - LA]
01.09.1933-03.06.1936: Wever (Walter), Gen. Lt. (died in an air crash)
04.06.1936-31.05.1937: Keßelring (Albert), Gen. Feldm.
01.06.1937-31.01.1939: Stumpff (Hans Jürgen), Gen. Oberst
01.02.1939-18.08.1943: Jeschonnek (Hans), Gen. Oberst (suicide)
Chef des Führungsstabes der Luftwaffe:
(01.07.1935)*-30.09.1935: Kühl (Bernhard), Gen. d. Fl.
01.10.1935-28.02.1937: Mayer (Wilhelm), Gen. d. Fl.
01.03.1937-30.06.1937: Deichmann (Paul), Gen. d. Fl.
01.07.1937-31.01.1938: Kühl (Bernhard), Gen. d. Fl.
01.02.1938-18.08.1943: Jeschonnek (Hans), Gen. Oberst**
1. Operations-Abteilung:

** Moog, Die Deutsche Luftwaffenführung, 1935-1945, pp. 260 und 261 writes that the linking of Chef des Generalstabes and Chef des Führungsstabes was abandoned in early 1943 (Nielsen), mid march 1943 (Siegler), or June 1st 1943 (Bertram) with Meister becoming Chef FüSt, whilst according to Beppo Schmid (p. 260 fn. 321) no separate Chef des Führungsstabes was acting under Jeschonnek. Moog furthermore states that the organizational linking was for finally abandonded when Korten and Koller took over.

Thanks again for the information! You wouldn't, by chance, have the info I'm missing in this list?

Re: Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
I know what you mean. In my opinion Bogatsch was Chef until 31/01/1939. Mayer was in Dresden with Luftgau IV, so I don´t think that Bogatsch was there from 01/12/1938 until 31/01/1939. But maybe he was deputising for Mayer there or he was only detached to Dresden still being Amtschef?

Re: Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
Hi Shawn!
2 interesting things:
1. Wikipedia gives the date of death of Jeschonnek 18/08/1943. This is confirmed by Moog, Die Deutsche Luftwaffenführung, 1935-1945, p. 260. Obviously Göring faked the date.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Jeschonnek
Therefore I have incorporated this info in my post above.

Therefore I have incorporated this info in my post above.

Re: Chef des Luftwaffen-Führungsstabes
This guess is now confirmed by Absolon (Die Wehrmacht im dritten Reich), p. 242:Stauffenberg II wrote:I know what you mean. In my opinion Bogatsch was Chef until 31/01/1939. Mayer was in Dresden with Luftgau IV, so I don´t think that Bogatsch was there from 01/12/1938 until 31/01/1939. [...]

So Bogatsch was indeed Chef Verwaltungsamt (LD) until 31/01/1939 replaced by Löb.
