This Q' came too me as i overlooked a map. If the allied could have planes in Iceland why couldn't germany have in Svalbard. they could scout on convoys for Murmansk.
They must have been thinking of that or is it too hard climate in winter?
Svalbard had too rough clima for airplanes.....
Both the allied and German forces had weatherstations here and some fighting occurred. The most famous must be when Scharnhorst and Tirpitz bombarded the Norwegian positions.
and all the Norw forces had was a small boat with a machine gun
read a book about it "angrepet på Longyearbyen"
seemed like it was used to get the big ships a victory.
was it only political the hole campain?
