Were soldiers in this war issued sub machine guns? What kinds?

Not in great numbers, but they were used. Here you have a page with those models employed by the Republican Army:
http://www.sbhac.net/Republica/Fuerzas/ ... Subfusiles
It is in Spanish, but I can translate the texts for you if you are interested.

Cool site! Do you know if they were issued to special units only like the assault guard?
Any info on what the nacionalistas used?

AFAIK, the nationalits received 170 MP-34 from German (20 with the Kondor Legion and 150 through HISMA). Apart from that, they had copies of the MP-34 produced in Spain, plus what captured submachine-gun they could obtain. I would say that they had a much lower number of these weapons than the EPR. But of course, as can be seen in the webpage I linked in my previous post, there is still much controversy about the numbers and models of submachine-guns in the SCW.

Following the El legado de Sigfrido book by Lucas Molina Franco, German sent to the rebels 2.438 MG-13 machine-guns, 438 through the Kondor Legion and 2.000 through HISMA. No one of them was a "regalo", as they were paid for. AFAIK, there were no MG-34's for the Spanish Army. The Kondor Legion may have had them, but they were not given to Spanish forces.

What is MP-34? Is it really submachine gun or you meant machine gun MG34?

It is really a submachine-gun, not the MG-34 machine-gun. I have seen it variously named Bergmann MP34, ERMA MP 34... nothing extrange, because weapons' nomenclature in the SCW was just a chaos. Probably it refers to this weapon:
