Tirpitz or Bismarck?

#1

Post by temujin77 » 11 Mar 2009, 20:22

This is a photo on my website World War II Database:
http://ww2db.com/image.php?image_id=1183

I have since forgotten where I got it from, but where it was, it noted that the ship in the photo is Bismarck. Recently, a friend of mine saw the photo and said he thinks it's Tirpitz instead.

Help? I know many of you are quite experts in this arena. Thanks guys :)

That is the Bismarck during her trials. She carried her boat cranes on the weather deck, as in the photo, while those on Tirpitz were one deck higher and several meters farther forward. Additionally, Tirpitz' funnel cap was black during this time period while Bismarck's was sliver-gray throughout her short life.

A lot depends on the angle the picture is taken from, but as stated by others, the crane positions are usually visable. Also on all ships the FC facilities and radar (the masts are often different slightly even on otherwise identical ships), the AA suite fitted, and on Tirpitz the amidships area directly around the catapult has torpedo tubes fitted and the position of the superstructure extends to the side of the ship but does not on Bismarck.

The links show the main area of difference, amidships around the catapults between the 2nd and 3rd twin 5.9" turrets.

Tirpitz

Hope these help?

Tirpitz

There is a couple of glaring differences, the tower configuration (gun control?) is higher on Tirpitz. Also turret nearest the bridge. Is bismarck's crane 'higher stowed' ? What is that 'greyed' area by the funnel on Tirpitz? Tirpitz is higher here than Bismarck, is that the crane deck as mentioned earlier?

I can't recover the picture, but from memory Tirpitz & Bismarck were together at Gotenhafen on 5 May 1941 when Hitler visited them.
I vaguely remember a picture of Hitler on the Bismarck with Tirpitz in the background.

Well, it's not this one and I've been unable to retrieve it via Google.

So I wonder if I'm not confusing with another picture on another ship .... :?

However if I'm not confused it must be a picture of the same set as this one...
