I am not sure that it is Darlan. First of all I think that we should be able to see clearly the five stars on his cap as Admiral. Secondly I can't find any references to Patton ever having meet with Darlan.

I think that instead it might be Vice-Admiral (four stars) Frix Michelier, whom Patton meet several times in Casablanca. I can't find a picture of him though.

Kind Regards

I think, this picture was token during a visit in France AFTER WWII, maybe during a D-Day Landings anniversary in the late fifties or early sixties.
Not easy to identify those french officers

Hello Prosper and Duchamp,

i think prosper is right of course with his assumptions about the time frame. i think its post 1950 at a SHAPE meeting. if you like to have a look, antother picture of this series:

about Martial Valin: yes indeed there are a lot of similarities with the B&W picture!

Yes I guess that the picture was token while Montgomery was visiting the Shape location at Roquancourt (France).
It must be between 1951 and 1967, because the SHAPE moved at that date (1967) to his actual location at Casteau near the town of MONS in Belgium.
I Found the same picture into the Google search engine and you can see that it belongs to Life Magazine.(below at the right: LI........)

But I still don't know who are the French officers.
I think that the identification of Martial Valin is right.
Sorry for my poor english, but I try to do my best. It's my schoolenglish and it's far away
Kindly regards from Belgium

Hello Prosper,

i think you are right with the location, of course.

about the timeframe, Monty resigned in 1958, so it shouldbe between 51 and 58.
Valin was accepted, leaves the Général de corps d'armée on the far left and the Général d'armée on the right side.
Now France didnt have hundreds of these people, i guess?

I have something that could help us!
I noticed that the general at left have something in his jacket, it seems to be a parachute emblem, so I've been looking for some info and look at the picture I've attached.

More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11th_Parachute_Brigade and http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/9e_régimen ... achutistes

intersting.

unfortunately i think this pictures have been taken after 1958.

http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Field-Mar ... 82204_.htm

(well using a poster shop as a reference is kind of weird, but that was the only thing i could find so far).

the only paratrooper general i could find quickly (besides Massu) is Sauvagnac

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2o ... -ngfEOGPug
Next the French Army regrouped all its Army Airborne regiments into two parachute divisions in 1956. The 10th parachute division (10e Division Parachutiste, 10e DP) came under the command of General Jacques Massu and General Henri Sauvagnac took over the 25th Parachute Division (25e Division Parachutiste, 25e DP). Again the Commandos de l'Air were kept under command of the Air Force.

(btw, i agree with Steen and Benden that the person in the first post is Michelier)

I thought in Sauvagnac but i think there is a problem with him, acording to wikipedia he was a Général de division (3 stars) and we are looking for a Général de corps d'armée (4 stars)....maybe wikipedia is wrong but...
