Hellmuth Lang / Rommel

#1

Post by Heimatschuss » 25 Apr 2009, 13:58

Hello,

I'm trying to find out when this photo was taken.

The second man from left seems to be Hauptmann (Captain) Hellmuth Lang. When did Lang become Ordonnanzoffizier (aide-de-camp?) of Rommel? Did he already accompany Rommel in Africa or did they meet only later in Italy/France?

Best regards
Torsten

Hello Torsten and Bernd

The photo is taken in Holland (Ijmuiden) 25.03.1944 (see info book Gen.Feldm. Rommel by Hans Sakkers, page 114)
Hptm. H. Lang was Ordonnanzoffizier in the staff of Rommel from 2/1944 till 12/1944

Regards Jos

Many thanks Jos!

I suspected it is somewhere from NW Europe because of the house in the background. The online edition of German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' just had this very pic with a caption saying that it was taken in the Sahara desert. With the kind of architecture in the background that sounded hardly believable and I hoped that dating it at least vaguely via Lang's term of office was possible. In the meantime I've also found out that the wrong location for the pic already appears in the archives of Ullstein Bilderdienst (http://www.ullsteinbild.de) so there's some rectifying to do.

Best regards
Torsten
