Thanks. I thought that oblong looking object lying on top was a disconnected roasting unit chimney and the raised unit was hidden by the soldier. Wouldn't it be behind him from that viewing angle?

I believe the oblong object is the inner, removable, liner of a hot food container, that is carried on the limber. (See below Image source: expired ebay auction) The roasting unit chimney slides down inside the kitchen, when not in use.
