GRU Emblem Origin and History.

Hi guys,

The emblem of the GRU or Soviet/Russian 'Foreign Military Intelligence Directorate has been a curiosity to me for awhile. Many a western observer will think "what's up with the Batman logo?" http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... emblem.svg

What is the symbolism of the bat mean by the way? I am guessing it has to do with secrecy-darkness, etc. Was this emblem always the official one for the GRU or not? If the latter, when did it first come into use and what was it's preceding emblem, if any? It's hard to find information on this emblem so I thought I would ask around these forums.
