Some excellent equipment here, also exceedingly rare pieces.
See pic of Me 262 Nightfighter-as far as I know the only one in existence.

Some interesting comments on the FW190 can somoene verify that, if it was the one that that landed by mistake in England in 1941 it is obviously a rare piece.

Some obvious mistakes on the website as well. The T34 shown is an T34-85 captured at Xangongo (Southern Angola) by the SADF in 1981. The T55 was captured at the Lomba battles of 1987-88. We actually captured 10 and used a squadron of them at our School of Armor, apparently a horrendous tank to drive.

I've just been to the Historic ships museum at Birkenhead, near Liverpool,UK. As well as a few modern ships, it's prize exhibit is U-534 which was raised back in 1993 from the North sea, where it had been sunk by a Liberator in May 1945. You can do a guided tour inside the sub (adults only) but it is like a time capsule from 1945. I highly reccommend it.

Let me recomend the WW2 Victory Museum in Auburn Indiana, USA. The museum recently picked up over 400 ww2 vehicles when it bought out a museum in Belgium. Nice selection! Go to... http://www.wwiivictory.org

My friends made a museum out of their collection. The restaured a Bunkersystem, their collection of every german, allied and swiss Infantery weapon you'll find in there you can imagine. Even Volksturmgewehre etc... WWI Camo helmets in original colors etc..

Then they have a huge collection of artillery, Flaks and tanks.
If you are there, you can have a ride in the tschech OT-18 (SdKfz 251), they will have a Drive simulator we used for our Pz 68 Crews (no tourist thing like in Bovington, real stuff) and they will have a place where you can drive a tank (in 2-3) years. But only for friends. (we did ;-)))

Have a look at http://www.festungsmuseum.ch

It's just across the south boarder of Germany. We used that bunker to protect the Rhine.

maybe slightly off-topic; there have been literally tens of thousands of German vehicles built before and during the war, yet only quite few remain. They weren't all destroyed, were they all scraped after the war or what?

A lot of them were destroyed by the germans not to fall in the enemy hands, others were scraped and others were used by Europe's armies during Cold War and scrapped after that (here in Romania we used Panther tanks until 1956 and than... they vaporised -you can't find them in museums ...), maybe a lot of them rust in the backyard of small military bases of Europe's not so developed countries... who knows...? -but most of them were scrapped during Cold War -the remaining ones can be found in museums and private collections.

Herdla Museum

Post by stril » 09 Feb 2004, 22:12

Hello.
Ill add some photos taken at Herdla Museum outside Bergen.
the museum is situated at the entrance to Fliegerhorst Herdla, MKB 34/977 Gavlen, and the area is also well know for its birdlife, lots of migrating birds in the area.
In addition to the pictures ill add two links, one a english guide, the other one to a map found at the same site.
Regards
stril
