Hello,
Does anyone out there know anything about SS Brigadefuhrer(dr) Richard Wendler? He was Stadt-Kommissar for Kielce in Poland and established the Jewish ghetto there in 1941.I know he was an early party member as I have quite a lot of his correspondence from 1931 onwards. My German does not stand up to deciphering his handwriting but it would make interesting reading if I can ever get round to it.This is the reason for my wanting to find out more about this guy.I would be intrested to hear from anyone who might be able to shed more light on him.Cheers!

Why wasn't he prosecuted? Was he a member of the Gehlen organization?

As german author Klee (a Who is who in III.Reich) says: He was a brother-in-law of Himmler, was sentenced in 1949 to 3 years working camp, from 1955 he worked as a lawyer in Munich.

Wendler was no relative of Heinrich Himmler. Gebhard Himmler was married to Wendler's sister, Hilde.

There is no relationship in law between Heinrich Himmler and Richard Wendler.
"BROTHER-IN-LAW, domestic relat. The brother of a wife, or the husband of a sister. There is no relationship, in the former case, between the husband and the brother-in-law, nor in the latter, between the brother and the husband of the sister; there is only affinity between them. See Vaughan's Rep. 302, 329."
We also have terms for similar distant "relationships" but the fact remains that the two men were not related.

I suppose under English law the relationship could be by law but not by blood

No Phil; there is no relationship between Heinrich Himmler and Richard Wendler in law or by blood, it is purely by association.

 Thanks, but we know that. The point in discussion is whether or not a Schwippschwager of Heinrich Himmler is related to him. A family relative is only related to Heinrich Himmler by blood or the law. A Schwippschwager is neither and he certainly couldn't be considered as a brother-in-law. A brother-in-law can only be the husband of your sister or the brother of your wife.
To return to the original point...Wendler's sister was married to Heinrich Himmler's brother, Gebhard. So he was Gebhard's brother-in-law. Wendler's relationship to Gebhard Himmler's brothers was therefore by association, not by blood or the law.
Regards,
Max.

I have never mentioned a "real" relationship in law, dear Max, just explained a german idiom to explain this case

That's what I call a quick answer 8O

At the moment my better half and myself try to gather which generals of Waffen-SS und Polizei were active Freikorps members, and to which ones they had belonged.

Na denn Helau :D :D
