42nd Division

Post by kereguelen » 07 Jan 2010 12:58

Hi,

I have some questions about the Japanese 42nd Division (similar to my post/question about 43rd Division):

As far as I know, 42nd Division was formed from 62nd Independent Infantry Group in May 1943 with 129th, 130th and 158th Infantry Regiments.

(1) Did the infantry regiments have or activate a third battalion each?

(2) It seems that the division received 12th Field Artillery Regiment as its divisional artillery when this was formed in July 1945. Did the division ever form reconnaissance and engineer regiments?

(3) What did 42nd Division do after its formation? Did it ever leave the Home Islands? It seems that it was (still?) located at Wakkanai when the war ended?

Thanks!

(1) Perhaps yes.
(2) 42nd Field Artillery Regiment seems formed in Jun 1943 just after the division was born. They later moved to Okinawa with 24th division (a battalion to Woleai Atoll), and 12th was newly raised perhaps based on a part of 42nd.
(3) Mar 1943 to Kuril. Feb 1945 relocated to northern part of Hokkaido (around Wakkanai). No engagement in battle.

Thanks for the information/reply, but my sources say that 42nd Field Artillery Regiment was formed in October 1939 and then always assigned to 24th Division?

Not sure if my information is true, but it would make some sense considering that 24th Division certainly did have its own artillery regiment (24th Field Artillery Regiment was part of 12th Division anyway).

The 42nd Division OOB lists the 42nd Engineer Regiment unit code 11908 and the 42nd Division Reconnaissance Regiment unit code 11906(both these regiments home station was Sendai) when raised in 1943 - reorganized in 1944 it dropped the FA and RECON regiments and Engineers were downgraded from regiment to UNIT which is probably battalion size.

You are right and it seems a typo in 帝国陸軍編制総覧 (imperial army formation handbook) from confusion of 十二(12) and 四十二(42). From the outset of the Pacific war 12th FAR fought as a part of 18th division in Burma. In the end of war 18th division had 18th mountain gun regiment. Perhaps 12th FAR was reorganized as 18th MAR because both regiment was led in 3 Dec 1940 by Lt.Col. Takasu Katsutoshi according to 帝国陸軍編制総覧. For perhaps reraised 12th FAR under 42nd division, in Jun 1943 Col. Takahashi Masao was appointed as the leader.

Don't know about 12th FAR as being part of 18th division during the Pacific War. But according to my sources, 18th Mountain Artillery Regiment was formed in August 1939 and assigned to 18th division afterwards. Cannot find any confirmation of 12th FAR being in existence prior to July 1945.
