BA-10 personnel carriers with removed turrets

Post by Daniel L » 18 Jan 2010 15:55

I found a mentioning of BA-10's having their turrets removed and functioning as personnel carriers. Does anyone have any pictures of that version? Which unit(s) used those?
After 1942 some had turrets removed and used as personnel carriers.

To me it seems that the BA-10 was not completely removed from frontline service after the winter 1941-1942 but was rather well used at least halfway into 1943. Anyone who knows better about this?

This is a quite informative site what comes to Soviet vehicles:

(click Бронеавтомобили)

The БА-22 itself was a BA-10 looking invention, but at the BA-10 photos there is one that might fit to your description:
A German captured(?) one

IIRC I've sen a Soviet newsreel where there were BA-10 driving at a street of captured Viipuri/Vyborg 1944.
Also seems that there were them at Olonet Isthmus same summer/autumn:

Thanks Juha. :D

I'm not sure if the vehicle in the photo is open topped, perhaps it is some kind of command vehicle, interesting nevertheless.

Aha...the vehicle should be open topped...
The one at the photo I posted, seems to have a roof and when looking more carefully at the rear wheel assembly... it might well not even be a BA-10, but an armored Gaz truck variant.

Here some drawings of the "basic", open topped model:

Those without armament were AFAIK also used as APC's

Here some photos:

Called in Finland as "Pula-ajan panssariauto" (Depresion era armoured car):

Well, I presumed a personnel carrier would be open topped. I could be wrong but that seems to have been the standard when it came to APCs during the war.

Yes, you are right, most APCs at those days were open topped.

One more possibility might be the quite similar, armored (three axle) ZIS-6 truck.
Easily mistaked as BA-10 at certain angles of view.
