While looking for something interesting to post, I came across this account of an early (Jul-Aug 1945) war crimes trial involving the lynching of some allied airmen in 1944. The news reports are from the New York Times, with the newspaper dates recorded on the .jpeg titles. Leon Jaworski later played a part in the Watergate trials.

For anyone interested the 5 men sentenced to death were executed in November 1945.
Margarete Witzler had her sentence commuted to 30 years imprisonment.

Thanks, PF. For our readers, the message board post says Sgt. Thomas D. Williams, one of the murdered airmen, belonged to the (US) 491st Bomb Group, 854th Bomb Squadron.
