Mammut radar and bunker

#1

Post by M.S.Jensen » 29 Aug 2010, 23:46

Hello to all

I’m trying to put together this little list of all the Luftwaffe bunkers carrying the Mammut radar.

The list here beneath is made by searching the web but it is as you see, not that complete. So I am hoping that some of you could help me fill in some of the missing information. And if there are any mistakes in what I have so far, then please notify me on that as well

Here is a small introduction on the data I am collecting. Much of this here below is just theories based on my observations. Any other ideas are welcome :)

1) I want to know the type of bunker used. Is it L485 type A or B, or is it a SK of some sort? See drawings of the L485 A and B below. We have been around the two types in an earlier thread: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=77954

2) About the cables going from the compensator room to the radar screen. I want to know how many. An example could be (24/24) – (24/24) see picture below. In my theory this means that there are two compensators, one for each deflector. Each cable goes out to two pairs of dipoles making it a total of 96 pairs of dipoles for each side of the Mammut radar screen.

It could also just be (24/24) which is then just one compensator meaning only one deflector (one side of the Mammut screen) is used. This seems to be the case with the marine type Mammut F on the type V143 bunker. I think the compensators are almost identical in these cases.

In case of the scenario with (12/12) - (12/12) cables, I believe that it has as many dipoles as the above but each cable has four pairs of dipoles. The compensator is in this case different from the ones with (24/24) cables. And in all of these bunkers I have seen with (12/12) cables there is an entry for machinery inside the compensator room which makes me think that the compensators in these cases are one large element. I have only seen pictures of leftovers of the (24/24) compensator so the (12/12) one is a mystery..

3) Does it have an entry for machinery inside the compensator room? As above, it seems to be the case with the (12/12) cable compensator..

4) The year of construction for the bunker..

5) What type of mast: It seems that there are at least two types of mast constructions in use for the Mammut - Cäsar. See the pictures below of what I mean. Type 1 looks very box like in structure an the four mast are not as wide as the type 2. So here I want a qualified guess on the type of mast used.

Hope it makes some kind of sense and that the knowledge is out there among you :)

Best regards
Morten

Some more of the pictures mentioned in the above thread:

(24/24) – (24/24) two compensators, one for each deflector. Here are only 24 of the cables for each compensator shown. The other cables go up the other “chimney”. (Picture from Büffel, regelbau.net):

Hi Morten,
An admirable endeavour, best of luck.
For locations please see:
http://www.gyges.dk/Stellungen%20Reich%20Mammut.pdf
I would love to see pictures or even plans of the Vf/SK constructions you mention in your chart.

Thank you SES

I have pictures of all the bunkers where I mention how many cables are going from the compensator room to the screen. And also of some of the others. I have lost my source list on all the pictures in this little project so that is a bit annoing. But I think I can upload a source list with links sometime today. As I said, the list is made by searching the web!

About the VF/SK in Habicht? Have you been inside it and do you in that case have pictures/recollection of some of the thinges I search?

The other VF/SK bunkers: The one in Norway is mentioned by Erik E as being a VF/SK and he mentions that he has seen some pictures but have no drawing :(
The others I have no drawings of, but maybe that will show up in this thread. I have pictures and they will come in form of the source list later. The one at MORITZ should be quit a treat :)

Oh yeah.. thats the stuff :)

Thank you JF.. I have updated the list in the first post.

Oh? Do you by any chance know if there is an entrance for machinery inside the compensator room (room nr.100 on the Rolf plans) in the three L485 B's at Amoebe, Vogel and Buntspecht? Pictures perhaps??

Hello All

Very interesting discussion , a other quistion could be how many pipes were there in the two concrete blocks on top of the roof , here you can see 12/12 on one pipe ( L485 Vogel ) so there would be 48 pipes goging out of the bunker ?

Regards Jos

P.S. Hamster is gone but a L 485 "A" and aslo Dickhauter Dieppe has a L 485 "A" and is still there .

This is coming along pretty nicely

@ Jos: Thank you. Do you have any pictures from Dickhäuter?

@ abigbagofpoo: Thanks for those supplementary pictures :)

@ Jory: Thank you. That gave me nearly all the answers for those three places :)

And just a little explanation of my theory about the compensators:

The number of cables going up through the concrete blocks on the roof should be the same as the ones leaving the compensator room (room nr. 100 on the Rudi Rolf plans)

When I writhe (12/12) – (12/12) then it describes that there are two compensators each with 24 cables. 12 cables go up through one “chimney” and 12 cables go up the other “chimney”.
But with two compensators, each chimney would in this case contain 2x12 cables.

So:
(12/12) = 1 compensator with 24 cables. 12 cables in one “chimney” and 12 cables in the other “chimney”

In the picture below by Jory. The platform in the middle of the room would hold two compensators with 24 cables each. So 48 cables leave this bunker in total. Each side of the doors into the “chimneys” represents one side of the Mammut screen!

1.) This is the cable pipes for compensator number 1. These cables would go up to the screen side of the Mammut that is facing the enemy.
2.) This is the cable pipes for compensator number 2. These cables would go up to the screen side of the Mammut that is facing away from the enemy.
3.) Platform for the compensators.

This is a (24/24) cable compensator. Or what’s left of it! I am convinced that this type of compensator is the same as used in the Marine type V143!! More pictures can be found on this link: http://www.haagsebunkerploeg.nl/include ... wartellaan

I have updated the list again and attached it here. It’s looking good :D
