Kurt Knispel with 162+ victories was the best Panzer Ace.

Hi Gents,

SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Wittmann was the most successful and famous tank commander of World War II. There is no doubt about this !
Not mentioning him when talking about pancer aces is like talking about WW1 fighter aces and not mentioning von Richthoffen. For further reading, check this link.

...No he was not, because there were several tank commanders who scored more kills. He was indeed the most famous, which explains why everybody assumes that he was the most successful.

- Kurt Knispel (s.Pz.Abt. 503) 168 tank kills
- Walter Schroif (s.SS-Pz.Abt.102) 161 tank kills
- Otto Carius (s.Pz.Abt. 502) 150+ tank kills
- Johannes Bölter (s.Pz.Abt. 502) 139-144 tank kills
- Michael Wittmann 138 tank kills
Not mentioning him when talking about pancer aces is like talking about WW1 fighter aces and not mentioning von Richthoffen.
No, its nothing like that because contrairy to Wittmann, who was not the mosy successful ace panzerzace of WW2, Von Richthofen was indeed the most successful fighterpilot in WW1.

...Hardly worth reading. It's a poor pastice of facts, myths and plain lies from earlier publications. In one word: crap

Timo,

Do you have more info on Walter Schroif? I can not find too much on him, he did not win the Knight's Cross, so it is hard to find a biography. I have seen him on a Panzer Ace list before but then on other lists his name does not appear. He must have been one of those guys in the shadows, so to speak. Thank you in advance!

Cheers,

Wolfkin

Untersturmführer Martin Schroif (not Walter. My mistake)
Gressenich , 22.02.1915 - 16.08.1979 (SS-Nr.287 993)
Panzerkommandant im 2.Kompanie/s.SS-Pz.Abt.502

I don't have other details. Perhaps you should try the forum of the s.SS-Pz.Abt.502 veterans at http://www.ss-panzer.de He is listed their in the personalliste.
