Hello to all :D; after a while...................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 1, 1939 The following U-Flotille submersibles will be ready to operate during the first half of October:

U 25 on October 15;
U 34 on October 11;

I intend to operate with them against merchant shipping in the Atlantic.

a) The convoy system has been widely introduced. The ports for the incoming convoys are: Weymouth for the canal area, Barry for the Bristol Channel - Irish Sea. The ports for convoys bound abroad are:
Plymouth for the Canal area
Milford Haven for the Bristol Channel - Irish Sea
Gibraltar is used by convoys bound in all directions and as a control port for ships bound for Northern Europe.
Ramsgate or the Downs are control ports for eastbound traffic from the Canal.
b) The strength of the convoys varies between 4 and 20 ships, their speed between 7 and 18 knots.

The BdU is ordered to implement the Führer Directive No. 5, which frees the full use of weapons against ships darkened off the English and French coasts. However, the area of attack is limited to a maritime area between 44 ° North and 62 ° North, as well as 7 ° West and 3 ° East.

U 31 - North Sea - No special incidents. PQ: AN.

U 35 - West Exit of the English Channel / North Atlantic - 07:45 - Smoke cloud in sight. Submerged. 08:40 - emerged next to the Greek steamer GEORGE M. EMBIRICOS. The Greeks stopped and it was searched. 09:23 - British steam sighting. She was not detained because the prey command was still on the Greek ship. Greek ship freed. 09:50 - To the surface and the prey command was re-embarked. Navigation towards Quessant. 11:20 - steamer in sight. It was the Portuguese ship ALFERRAREDE that stopped and was registered. Released. 12:45 - Submerged in front of a plane. 6:45 PM - Another steamer in sight. It is the Belgian steamer SUZON. The boat surfaced shortly after and the ship was ordered to stop. The steamer tries to escape and sends SOS. Shot to the bow. The crew enters the lifeboats. 19:00 - Approach to the lifeboats. They are well equipped. The captain gave the course. Torpedo over steamer. Impact. The steamer splits and sinks in five minutes. The Belgian SUZON sunk. 19:40 - Course west. No more incidents. PQ: BF.

Hello to all :D; after a while...................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 2, 1939, the Naval Warfare General Staff has authorized an area around England where darkened ships can be sunk without warning. It will be a great relief for the submarines. However, the area is very narrow, so practical results will probably be few. In Germany have been known that English merchant ships repeatedly attack submarines that had stopped them in accordance with the prize law. It was announced that if such cases were repeated, the German submarines would have to take the corresponding measures. In response, the Admiralty announced an instruction to all English merchant ships to ram any sighted German submarine.

In Very Secret Message 9212 of 9/30, the Naval High Command ordered that the submarine war against maritime traffic in the North Sea and the Baltic be stopped. An additional order of the Naval Warfare General Staff establishes: ships that, in the opinion of the commander, are equipped to carry more than 120 passengers, should be considered as passenger ships.

U 31 entered port. This U-boat has sunk the SS "Hazelside" 4,646 tons. She also attacked 2 ships in the convoy that she reported at the time and sank one for sure. This unit gives the impression of being particularly intelligent and cheerful.

U 31 - North Sea / Wilhelmshaven - 08:45 - Arrival in Wilhelmshaven (AN 9814). Ending of the 2nd Patrol. The submersible was at sea for 24 days and sank two British merchant ships with a total of 8,706 TRBPQ: AN 9814

U 35 - North Atlantic - 07:12 - submerged in front of sailboat. 07:25 - Surface. 07:55 - Immersion alarm in front of one aircraft. 08:20 - Surface. Approach to sailboat. 08:29 - Submerged in front of a plane. 08:40 - Surface. Sailboat sighted, navigation to the Operations Area. 15:00 - sailboat in sight again. Immersion and approach to it. Radio message received: "Darkened ships may be sunk in certain areas. B.d.U." Two days too late. The submersible had AQUITANIA a ship with 45,700 GRT in front of the tubes. Sailboat is a small target. She was not attacked. 17:30 - Surface. Northwest of Quessant moved and hard. No more incidents. PQ: BF

Hello to all :D; after a while...................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 03, 1939 Various radio intelligence reports indicate that the Greek ship SS "Diamantis" has been sunk at the western entrance of the Channel. They are confirmed by a radio message from U 35, reporting that the entire crew of the sunken ship is on board uninjured. Presumably the Commander issued the signal because he thought he should contradict the contrary reports. With the DIAMANTIS, 7,700 tons of iron ore went to the bottom of the sea.

In a meeting at the Naval Warfare General Staff, the BdU presents its operational plans for the next operations in the ATLANTIC.

U 35 - North Atlantic / West Channel Exit - 00:00 - Sailing west. 12:45 - Greek steamer sighted. 13:15 - Surfaced alongside steamer sighted and ordered to stop. The ship stopped. A signal was made to continue. Reactionless. Gun on alert. The crew of the steamer breaks into the boats. These capsize. 13:45 - Those who float in the water are rescued by the submarine in the most difficult circumstances and brought on board. 15:03 - Submerged in front of an airplane. 15:40 - Torpedo against steamer misses. The second torpedo also misses. Only the third manages to hit. The ship sank slowly. The Greek DIAMANTIS sank. 19:10 - Surfaced and underway. Attempts are now being made to bring the rescued Greek crew ashore. Due to earlier failed torpedoes, two torpedoes remained on board. The return march began. PQ:BF

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 04, 1939, the following orders were received from the Naval Warfare General Staff on the conduct of the war against maritime transport:

1) The area within which blackout ships can be attacked without restriction extends west to 15° Long. w.
2) Submarines may immediately and unrestrictedly attack enemy merchant ships that appear unequivocally armed or that the Naval Warfare Staff announces as armed, based on unmistakable evidence at their disposal. Steps must be taken to save the crew if circumstances allow, without endangering the U-boat. Passenger ships should still not be attacked as long as they are not troop carriers, even if they are armed.

Both orders signify a good step forward for the conduct of the war. They are better suited to the nature of a submarine attack and increase the chances of success.

U 35 reported that she was beginning her return voyage. The radio message also mentioned that:
1) Again there were 2 spontaneous explosions of G7a fuses.
2) She had to land the crew of the Greek ship on the Irish coast.

U 35 - North Atlantic - 00:00 - 28 men from the Greek steamer sunk the previous day are still on board. All without news. In the U-boat it smells like in the zoological garden. Not a steam or fishing boat in sight to free the Greeks. So the submarine has to bring them to land itself. 15:00 - Underway to Dingle Bay. At Ventry Harbor she came within 10m of the rocks and landed the Greeks in seven boats. 40 Irish join in and take the Greeks. 18:00 - Depart from Dingle Bay. No more incidents. PQ: AM

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 05, 1939 during a meeting with the Chief of the Army General Staff, RAEDER outlines his prognosis for the future war against Great Britain and assumes that only the Navy and the Air Force can achieve a decisive and lasting effect against the British. However, this would require a comprehensive and generous program of submarine construction. Only a small increase in U-boats can be expected in 1939, and 1940 is also considered insufficient in this respect. It is not until 1941 that a notable increase in forces is expected, which must aim to have at least 300 submarines available. At this meeting, the question of whether the army could provide the navy with a larger submarine base through operations in the west will also be discussed. This is answered with a clear NO. Current material requirements would not permit a Western campaign. This would only be possible after a new update.

The British freighter MARWARRI (8,063 GRT) hits a mine laid by U 32 and is damaged. On the steamer loaded with government goods, two men from the crew lose their lives due to the explosion of the mine. The ship's three turbines are due to be replaced during an extended stay at the shipyard in SWANSEA (AM 9865).

U 35 - North Atlantic - 10:00 - Submerged. The gyroscope failed. Malfunctions in cylinder I of the port diesel. repair work. 19:00 - Surface. Diesel back in service. 22:30 - Gyroscope in service. Surface navigation to the north. No more incidents. PQ: AM

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 06, 1939 an order was received from the Naval Warfare General Staff, according to which submarines in the future will report:

1) Cases of ships guilty of incorrect behavior, contrary to neutrality and international law, when detained.
2) Cases of armed merchant ships.
3) Incidents involving neutral aircraft and warships.
4) Own violation of neutral territorial waters.
5) Illegal action by neutrals.

Witness statements must be obtained in writing and must be signed by them. If possible, witnesses should be brought in person. The reports must be made as soon as possible, so that they can be exploited for political and propaganda purposes in due course. However, they should not be performed if this implies an operational disadvantage for the U-boat.

The English ship SS "Lockgoil", of 9,462 tons, hit the minefield laid by U 32 in the Bristol Channel. Sinking uncertain.

U 35 - North Atlantic - 12:30 - Around St. Kilda, steamer in sight. 12:55 - Immersion and approach. On the surface next to the steamer. The Norwegian ship HIRD was stopped and investigated. No contraband. Released. 19:00 - storm, high swell, Sea 7. Surface navigation. No more occurrences. PQ: AM.

On October 07, 1939 at a meeting on the construction of warships and the expanded submarine construction program, a production of 20 U-boats per month after the start of the program is anticipated. However, the solution to the labor issue must be clarified for it. With a larger allocation of steel to the Navy, it would be possible to build 28 to 30 units as part of a large submarine construction program beginning in 1942.

The German envoy in Moscow reports that the Soviet leadership believes that Murmansk is not isolated enough to be used by German surface forces and submarines as a repair facility. The Soviets propose Teriberka as an alternative.

U 35 - North Atlantic - 00:30 - Black day for the machine. Permanent failures, sometimes both machines failed at the same time for long periods. 13:00 - Submerged for repairs. 19:00 - 23:00 - Navigation between fishing boats / lighted guards. No more incidents. PQ: AM.

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 8, 1939, U 15 entered port from the Canal and brought back valuable reconnaissance results. The following is of importance to Atlantic submersibles:

1) Channel patrolled, including Dover-Calais line, weak, average bad weather. The patrol boat listening team was ineffective and inaccurate.

2) Precise navigation targeting was possible everywhere.

3) No blockages observed, but several buoys appeared to be related to defensive obstacles.

It is clear that, at least for the moment, it is possible to move through the channel. This means a considerable shortening of the approach path for the Atlantic U-boats. It remains to be decided whether the additional risk is justified by the expected success of using the Canal route and thus they can stay longer in their area of operations.

The following order was received from the Naval Warfare General Staff: Since the British have so far not confiscated German exports on neutral ships, we must not confiscate enemy exports on neutral ships bound for neutral ports either.

U 35 - North Atlantic/North Sea - 01:00 - Fishing boats dodged. 04:00 - weather improvement. 10:30 - Diving in front of an aircraft. Immersion navigation used for machine repairs. 19:00 - To Surface. The northern tip of the Shetlands was reached. surface navigation. Apart from the fishing boats, there are no other incidents. PQ: FA.

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 09, 1939 the following units of the flotilla are expected to be ready, as the next wave of Atlantic U-boats: U 25 Oct 17; U 31 Oct 19; U 32 Oct 19; U 26 Oct 20 or 22 and U 53 Oct 21 (of the Wegener Flotilla). Three with large and two with small radius of action. I intend (Dönitz) to use the large submersibles in the Mediterranean, roughly between Gibraltar and Oran.

There are so many convoy reports there that it should be worth sending them despite the long approach route and consequent short period in the area of operations. I think there will be very little opportunity for war according to prize law, but the chances of attacking without warning should be great. Also, the long and narrow sea areas make some cooperation between submersibles possible, even with so few.

U-boats of the 2nd U-Flotilla (Saltzwedel Flotilla) can only be used in the sea zone around England. There are several mine laying operations that have been shown to be worthwhile.

U 35 - North Sea - 06:45 - Submerged before escorts. Work on the torpedoes. 09:30 - Surface. Constantly diving in front of planes. 15:00 - Surface. Sighting of five planes. Submerged. 15:00 - 18:15 - 66 aircraft bombs and depth charges near and beyond. 18:15 - Emerge for surface navigation. No more incidents. PQ:AN

On October 10, 1939, VERSUCHSFALL A began, the first operation of the German submarine force using the wolf pack tactic. So far it is not known with certainty that the English Channel is impassable. There are only caveats, which are offset by the fact that U 31 and U 15 passed almost unhindered. It really would not have been necessary for U 35 to turn around. The commander was too influenced by some remarks, as he himself now agrees.

Hitler and RAEDER agree to a resurgence of the trade war due to the expected rejection of the German peace offer by ENGLAND. RAEDER also gave Hitler a lecture on the submarine construction plan. However, Hitler only asked for more documents to be produced. RAEDER is also analyzing the possibility of new submarine bases. Those located in BELGIUM are not usable, bases along the Norwegian coast would be more promising.

U 35 - North Sea - 00:00 - Fire sighted from Utsire. Sailing to the south at a certain distance from the coast. 12:05 - Submerged in front of an aircraft. 12:51 - Surfaced. 14:30 - March to the gap in the barrier. 14:51 - Submerged in front of an aircraft. 15:29 - Emerge for surface navigation. No more incidents. PQ: AN

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 11, 1939 The question of creating bases comes to mind again and again when considering the long approach routes of U-boats to their areas of operations during which they are in constant danger, but have little opportunity to take action by themselves. There are two possibilities:

1) Fixed bases in friendly neutral countries.
2) Floating bases.

For 1. The supply to some extent has been arranged in remote bays of northwestern Spain. Fixed several supply ship encounters. The actual feasibility of the scheme can only be tested in practice.

For 2. The S.S. Ammerland is turning into a supply ship. She is meant to be stationed in a suitable bay in Iceland, camouflaged as a ship with engine trouble.

The BdU is informed that Irish neutrality must be strictly observed. If this is not observed, there would be fear that the British will not respect it either.

The Naval Warfare General Staff prepared a memorandum whose content is based on an intensification of the naval war. Therefore, submarine warfare should be primarily aimed at unannounced actions against enemy convoys, troop carriers, and all merchant ships, as well as unilluminated ships. Proceeding in accordance with the prize rules will be considered only secondarily and requires the safe operation of the submarine in question. In addition, increased mine laying at enemy supply ports and access points by submarines and surface units is recommended. The goal must be the complete isolation of Great Britain.

U 35 - North Sea - 3:00 - The northern entrance to the breach in the barrier (Sperrlücke) was reached. 15:55 - Alarm dive in front of an aircraft. To surface. 22:00 - heading to the lightship Norderney. No more incidents. PQ:AN

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

On October 12, 1939 The Naval Warfare General Staff is first considering how the traffic of goods from the Baltic States through Sweden and Norway to the United Kingdom can be contained. The Allied SL-4F convoy set sail from FREETOWN. The convoy consists of 2 merchant ships. The Allied OB-17 convoy broke up, its merchant ships continuing the march to their assigned ports of call alone.

The U 35 entered port, the U-boat sank:
1) English trawler "Arlita" 325 t.
2) English trawler "Lord Minto" 285 t.
3) A freighter of a convoy 9,000 t.
4) The Belgian ship SS "Suzen" 2,239 t.
5) The Greek ship SS "Diamantis" 4990 t.
In total 16,839 tons.

She also hit a 17,000-ton tanker, whose sinking was not observed as it had to be submerged. She also came across the "Aquitania", obscured in the Channel. She did not attack him, as permission to attack darkened ships did not come until 48 hours later. This has been a particularly successful patrol. The crew made a very good impression on the return.

U 35 - North Sea/Wilhelmshaven - 05:30 - Opposite Jade. Registration with the lightship through the pilot of the steamer. 10:30 - Arrival in Wilhelmshaven (AN 9814). Finishing of the 1st Patrol. PQ: AN 9814. U 35 was at sea for 34 days, sinking four ships totaling 7,850 GRT and damaging a 6,014 GRT tanker.

Hello to all :D; more..................

War with Great Britain and France!

October 13, 1939 the xB service recorded an increase in Allied reports of sightings and combat actions against German submarines in the ATLANTIC. This is seen as the first sign of activity from the new wave of German U-boats in the sea area at said location.

The Naval Warfare General Staff continues its reflections on the trade war in the EASTERN BALTIC. According to Swedish reports, the country's trade in goods with the Baltic countries has reached a peak. The mentioned command orders the investigation of all ships going from the Baltic States to SWEDEN. In addition, massive diplomatic and economic pressure will be exerted on the countries of origin and SWEDEN.

October 14, 1939 Radio intelligence reports about German U-boats continue to mount. They give the impression of a very promising surprise in the area planned for the operation.

On October 15, 1939, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs the Naval Warfare General Staff that the creation of an ECONOMIC DEPARTMENT is planned. In this must be summed up all the issues of the ECONOMIC WAR. Initially, however, the department should only be limited to civilian tasks that fall within the Foreign Affairs area of responsibility. The activities of this department should include general trade policy, economic warfare against enemy powers, and defense against economic warfare against enemy powers, blockades, prohibited goods, blacklisting, economic relations with neutral states, as well as questions about German property in abroad and foreign property in Germany. The Naval Warfare Staff begins with preliminary considerations to create a WAR ECONOMY DEPARTMENT.

The xB service continues to intercept radio messages indicating extensive Allied activity in the ATLANTIC. West of GREAT BRITAIN increased British anti-submarine activity by the 3rd and 12th Destroyer Flotillas. This focuses on the GELB (YELLOW) Area of Operation, where German U-boats have been conducting VERSUCHSFALL A since October 10, 1939.

There are no U-boats of the flotilla at sea.
