Oberst Karl Langesee

Post by Rudolf44 » 08 May 2011, 20:50

I am looking for info on Oberst Karl Langesee on his career in 1945.
His bio on the Lexikon der Wehrmacht (http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... geseeK.htm) as gives Kdr. of Gren.Rgt.748 (708.VGD) from November 1944. The latter ceased to exist in January 1945. What you it thus ordered after that date ? Has he ordered the 47.VGD in April 1945 ?

Thanks in advance
Rudolf

Hello Rudolf44,

according to divisional histories in Lexikon der Wehrmacht Langesee commanded 47. Volksgrenadier-Division in April 1945 before being replaced by an Oberst Hauser.

On the other hand according to http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/47._Volks- ... r-Division Langesee took over command of 47. Volksgrenadier-Division only on May 2nd, 1945 after the death of his successor Oberst von Grundherr.

The second version is supported by a description of the fighting at Fern Pass in April/May 1945 here http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/wbb ... #post46213. Going by this description Oberst von Grundherr was KIA on May 1, 1945 and Oberst Langesee took over command. If there was much left of 47. Volksgrenadier-Division for Langesee to command after the American success at Fern Pass on May 2nd is another question.

Best regards
Torsten

One additional bit of information.

According to his personnel file, Karl Langesee was born on 18. September 1910, not 10. September. Lexikon-der-Wehrmacht has it right. Wikipedia, ww2awards, and ritterkreuztraeger.info have it wrong.
