Inbore explosion is a ugly thing. I saw some photographs of exaples during my basic artillery training, Fortunatly never experienced this relatively rare event.

This was one of the barrels from Battery Roon - 22cm K532(f) - in Jersey which blew up on firing, killing at least one of the crew. They buried the blown bits near the gun pit, I assume, which were then discovered when excavation work was being done in preparation for the football pitch at the new prison at La Moye, and the pieces removed to the No.3 gun pit at Battery Möltke, where they still lie today...

Were these all accidental explosions, or "spiking' the guns?

Hi Spontoon,

I think most of these photos show accidental explosions, although it is sometimes difficult to differentiate.

Thanks Sturm,

I suspected as much, it's just that the milled protrusion behind the barrel step looks different from the ones I've seen. No wonder, a portion of the barrel seems to be covered with canvas or some such stuff.
