What countries did Hitler visit?

#1

Post by tippman » 05 Oct 2011, 03:50

I hope this is posted in the correct section.

We know that Hitler served on the western front in France during WW1 and we know that Hitler visited France on several occasions during WWII when he visited Paris and travelled to Hendaye to meet with Franco.
Hitler also visited Italy in 1938 for one week staying in Rome.

We also know that Hitler moved his command quarters to Poland (Prussia?) during WWII.
And that Hitler visited Czechoslovakia and Austria following the annexation of territory in both regions.
Hitler also visited Finland in 1942.

What other countries did Hitler visited prior to or during WWII?

Thanks in advance.

I wasn't aware that he had visited Switzerland. thanks for this information.

So our list includes France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Finland.
Hitler did get to the French/Spanish border of Spain but he never actually visited Spain to my knowledge.

I wonder did he visit any other countries prior to or during WWII?

tippman,

Here is some information about Hitler's trip to see Franco, taken from "In the shadow of the hawk: an intimate chronicle of World War II and one woman's search for meaning", by Lester J. Bartson & Josephine B. Curry (University Press of America, 2004, page 452):
...and on October 22 departed for the Spanish border. His train was routed through occupied (but not Vichy) France, via Montoire, where he met with Pierre Laval (acting as Petain's deputy). He discussed expected support by the Vichy regime. The train then proceeded south, down the narrow corridor of occupied France between Vichy territory and the sea, past Biarritz, and finally, arrived on October 23 at the seaside resort of Hendaye. There, Hitler's train could go no further, due to the wider gauge of the Spanish track. Franco was to arrive by his own train and receive Hitler at the platform where the Spanish and French rails met. Thus Hitler never reaqlly visited Spain.

Saporoshe (Russia) is in fact Zaporizhia (Russian: Zaporozhye) in Ukraine.

It is Mariupol on the Azov Sea in Ukraine.

Although I don't know was he really in Mariupol, he was in nowadays Lithuania, when he visited Memel (nowadays Klaipėda) after its return to Germany in 1939.

I was playing trivial pursuit last night and the question Read "What British university did Adolf Hitler attend?" Answer: "Liverpool"

Clearly this is an error(Despite his Liverpudlian relatives), but an error that seemed to have grown some legs quite a few years ago.

The information on the site is really interesting, Stril. I had never read about Hitler's trip aboard the Deutschland. Thanks for posting the link.

Best regards,
