Potsdamer Platz

I believe I've answered one of my own questions: the steps in front of the Wall are a bricked-up S-Bahn station. There is an excellent series of photos of Potsdamer Platz on Flickr, here:

Also highly recommended are the photos of the Anhalter Bahnhof in 1960 when it was more complete than the ruins are today.

Cor: like yourself I have a fascination with Potsdamer Platz. I don't know whether this is on topic - I think it is - but I often wonder if there should be a thread on good places to go in various historical cities. For example, if you sit outside Starbucks, (whether you like the coffee or not) just down from Potsdamer Platz, you can gaze over the road to where the New Reichschancellery used to be, i.e. down Voss Strasse. A shortwalk to Potsdamer Platz proper offers another short walk to the (excellent) resistance display in the Bendlerblock. In the other direction, down Leipziger Strasse from memory, you can wander down to the surviving Post Office building as seen here:

and on the way you will have passed the Göring 'Preussenhaus' and the former Railway Authority, both of which still stand. The great thing is that from Potsdamer Platz, in a radius of perhaps a kilometre, you can see all this surviving history.I will post a photo of the Railway Authority buiding when I get my computer sorted (this is being typed on my laptop). I photographed it as it looked period but had no idea what it was until today.

There are a lot of good topics here on this forum about some of cities/areas, for instance berlin, munchen, nurnberg, obersalzberg area. But you can always make a new topic.


To Redstar, thanks for the picture, you always come with a picture i have never seen. Im convinced now that it could maybe be the same entrance. I always wondering this because its a good reference point to make some shots when i ever will go to berlin again.

If I have in fact sorted my computer, attached should be a photo of the Railway Authority building which you will find on your left if you walk down Leipzigerstrasse from Potsdamer Platz to the Postal Ministry. I photographed this building on spec - I had no idea what it had been - but it had survived and it looked period to me . You can find info on it here:
