I have him briefly mentioned in Southern France as Kommandeur Grenadier-Regiment 991, which must have been in 1944 just before the unit was transferred to Normandy.

Thanks for the info.
The GrenRgt. 991 was destroyed with the rest of the 277. Infanterie-Div. in the Falaise pocket.
So probably the Kommandeur was wounded in the pocket and later died of his wounds in the retreat to Belgium or killed during this retreat ?

Greetings, Davy

Must be beceause the unit was reinstituted in Hungary in September 1944 and he died in Belgium. Or he was breifly before he got killed attached to another unit.

Hello,

according to General Albert Praun, former commander of 277. Infanteriedivision, Oberst Hambeck was killed by partisans after the outbreak from the Falaise pocket (Praun, 2004, p.255).

I don't know how reliable this information is because Praun left 277. Infanteriedivision already on Aug. 12, 1944 to take up his new position in the Führerhauptquartier. From the text you get the impression that Praun kept an interest in the division.

Going by the GoogleBooks snippets of Scherer (2008, p.8) I can see Oberst Hambeck was still o.k. and in command of Grenadierregiment 991 just after it had got out of the pocket though by then the unit had been reduced to 200 men.
