T-100 captured in Summa
T-100 captured in Summa
Hi,
Does anyone have any info what happened to T-100 heavy which was captured by finnish troops in Summa during the Winterwar? Was it left behind ? Sold as scrap? Sold to germans? Probably most modern tank captured 1939-40 was not put in to use afterwards - makes me just wonder....

According to http://www.iltasanomat.fi/kotimaa/art-1 ... 82189.html a SMK which received mine damage in Finnish positions was too big for the Finns to tow to the rear, after the Winter War the Soviets needing eight smaller tanks for the recovery.

Hello
SMK and T-100 are two different tanks built in a single prototypes. On December 19, 1939 Finnish troops captured SMK tank, not T-100.
According to the information in the М. А. Архипова “Полная энциклопедия танков и бронетехники СССР Второй мировой войны 1939-1945” (Харвест, 2010) [M. A. Archipov's “Full Encyclopedia of Tanks and Combat Vehicles USSR WWII 1939 – 1945” (Harvest, 2010)]
Both tanks (with KV prototype) since December 1939 took part in the fighting during the Winter War. They belonged to the 91st Tank Battalion of 20 Heavy Tank Brigade.
SMK entered the mine, immobilized and was stuck behind Finnish lines near Summa. During the fighting crew of the T-100 rescued the SMK's crew. T-100 with 15 people inside withdrew from the battlefield.
SMK stood there to the end of February 1940. Despite attempts to tow it for the Finns.
In the last days of February 1940, Soviet breakthroughs Finnish defence lines and occupied several sectors near Summa and SMK was recaptured by Soviets troops.
After the takeover by the Soviets, SMK was temporarily repaired and has been towed by six T-28 tank (not eight) to the Perkjärvi railway station (former Finnish, current Russian, to the 1948 Перк-ярви – Perk-yarvi, now Кирилловское – Kirillovskoe). There was dismantled for parts and loaded onto rail cars.
On railway platforms SMK was put to the Kirov Plant Kirov Factory in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Probably he arrived there in early March 1940, but Soviets eventually abandoned its repair and abandoned further work on the tank.
In Kirov Factory SMK was stood to the 1950's when in the half of 1950's he was scrapped and melted down for steel.
Interestingly, based on the images that Finns handed over to German Military Intelligence SМК tank was mistakenly identified as a tank T-35C.

Hi
Juha ! great hit ! Big Thanks !
To me the film showns T-100, and the first time I saw T-100 in movie on "Live"
I put compilation of pictures from the film and the picture of differences in the construction of the rear of SMK and rear of T-100. These differences lead to the conclusion that it's a T-100.
