prince whilhelm von wied(albania)

Post by Balrog » 18 Apr 2003, 22:08

hello. i am researching prince whilhelm von wied. he ruled albania for 6 months in 1914, but after fighting with local war lord esad toptani and then having ww1 break out, was force to withdraw. i believe he fought in the austrian army during ww1. after the war he was not allowed to return to his throne by the allies. he moved to rumania where his sister in law was the queen of rumania. he died there in april, 1945. does anyone know what prince whilhelms ww1 war record was? perhaps someone who lives in germany can tell me where wied's home town is located? are there any weid family members left in the castle/palace? is there any current "prince of weid"? thank you for any information.

His brother served as the German ambassador to Sweden before and during the Second World War. Just a little bit of useless fact.

Best regards,
Marcus K.

Joel,
If you do a Google search on:

Prinz zu Wied 1914

you'll get some German websites that can be translated thru Google.

One says Wied(1876-1945)served for 3 years on the Russian front during WW1.

According to the New Universal Encyclopedia the Wied family takes its name from the county of Wied in the Rhineland. They were counts from the 10th century and ruled thier county until the changes following the French Revolution.

In 1784 they where elevated to Princes and continued to reside in the town of Neuwied, which was founded by members of the family. Prince Wilhelm was offered the crown of Albania following the Balkan War of 1912. Taking the title mpret (from the latin imperator = emperor) he reigned March 7 to September 3 1914. After the Great War he and his family adopted Rumanian nationality in 1934. Wilhelm being the nephew of Queen Elizabeth of Rumania (1843-1916) the consort of king Carol I of Rumania, which she wed in 1869.

the prince of albania was the queen of romania's nephew. i read (on an internet web site) that the prince of albania's wife(sophia) was the sister of the queen of romania in the 1930's. perhaps both cases are true. those royals intermarried quite a bit too much.

As stated above queen Elizabeth of Rumania (nee Wied ) died in 1916. The queen of Rumania in the 1930ies was Helen (born princess of Grecce), she was the mother of the last? king of Rumania Mihai (or Michael born in 1921). The Greek royal family was of Danish decent, and thus not related to the zu Wieds.

For more information about the Prince of Wied's family and genealogy, go to <http://gsteinbe.intrasun.tcnj.edu/royal ... s/wied.htm>. The brother who was German ambassador to Sweden under the Nazis was Prince Viktor (b. 1877). He was distantly related to the Swedish royal family (e.g., through his ancestor Duke Wilhelm of Nassau-Weilburg).

according to an internet web site prince wihelm von wieds daughter was arrested after ww2 by the romanian communists, and sent to a communist labor camp, where she died in 1956. i have not been able to find out if this is true or not. internet web sites are not always accurate. does anyone have any information on the fate of prince wihelm's children? the son was named karl victor, the daughter was named marie elenora.
