10.30hrs Reconnaisance order to Intelligence Detachment:
Patrol no.1, Sgt. Pietilä +2 shall reconnoitre the terrain Metsoinlampi-PRajaselkä-pt.123-Patalampikangas. Must reconnoitre the road connection from pt 117 to the road at pt119-123
Patrol no.2, Pvt. Koskinen +2 shall reconnoitre the terrains W and S of Haahkajärvi. Shall observe the road traffic.
Patrol no.3, Cpl. Gustafsson +2 shall reconnoitre the terrains of Mustalampi, Joutsenjärvi, S of Mustalampi and possible road connections. The patrol shall also reconnoitre the traffic on the Siira road and the lodgings next to the road.
The patrols shall set out togeter on 29.8.at 21.00 hrs. They shall part not until in the enemy rear. Return on 1.9.in the morning together. Rallying point E shore of Metsoinlampi at 00.00-01.30hrs. Password Antti-Kustu.

At 22.10 and 03.25 propaganda transmission in front of “Tie”. War news and exhortations to surrender. Bad audio.

Patrolling:
Two recce patrols reconnoited the Etu promontory, found to be unmanned.
Recce patrol from “Varsi” 0+1+3 found dense securing E of it.
Ar 02.30hrs patrol to no-man's-land set out from “Hotti”. Did not return yet.

At “Etu”: Patrol Hintikka 1+1+1 23.30-00.30.
Found enemy manning in the terrain S of “Etu”.
At “Metsä”: Patrol Lahtinen 1+1+3 set out at 02.30hrs. Not yet back.

At 22.00hrs a recce patrol (Int. det.) set out from “5” 0+2+7. The patrol hit an enemy pipe mine on the pt 110 ridge whereby 8 men were wounded, 2 of which badly.

Our veterinarian reports:
At the moment the number of the Rgt horses is 384 (should be 387) . The conditon of the horses is satisfactory, however in some outfits the condition is not so good due to the low energy content of the local hay. To remedy the situatin the D. has promised to distribute a full ration of (fodder) cellulose for every horse.
Health care has been satisfactory, shoeing and lodging likewise. Dugouts for 2 to 4 horses are to be built.
Harness are in satisfactory condition. There is some shortage of brushes, currycombs, pails and halters. There is enough of local hay for about one week. Daily about 12 000kg shall be transported by lorries from Suistamo. Veterinarian personnel has been changed. Younger ones have been shifted to the front, replaced by older men.

“Tie”: at 02.20hrs patrol 1+3+23. Having reached the Russki wire two men hit a minefield. The attept failed utterly and the patrol returned
“Tukki”: 02.30hrs Patrol Määttä 1+2. Recce task. Did not return .

12.00hrs A.C. Loudspeaker truck arrived at the Rgt sector to transmit at the Siira road with loudspeaker. Included also 20 propaganda projectiles.

14.30hrs Lt. Kärkölä, messenger officer of I/15.Pr. Contacted to co-ordinate their prisoner catching operations in the terrain N of Uuksujoki. The intention is to send their patrol via Karutjärvi section.

(Overstruck chapter below: The planned prisoner catching operation for last night on the sector of II Btn shall be carried out next night. For that purpose Sappers from the Engineer Platoon of the Rgt were ordered to demining duty.)

Weather has been varying.

18.00hrs The loudspeaker truck on the Rgt. Sector receved orders to return to their Coy as their programme is not applicable in the presentr situation. Also the firing of propaganda projectiles was forbidden.

19.05hrs Order from 8.D. HQ:
One platoon (Pullo) of 18.Krh.K. Shall be withdrawn from the line and move away according to the instructions of the D.

Due to the aforementioned 13.Coy shall occupy the observation post of Pullo and aims the tubes (I/13.Coy) at the targets.

22.00hrs 8.D.HQ informed that if any exceptional distinghuised service has occurred during the day, the men can be listed for suggested decorations in the 17.30hrs situation report. (Big “?” in the margin!)

09.45hrs Having enquired about the situation of JR45 they reported that the enemy ceased all fire at 07.00hrs

09.35hrs Capt Tenho reoprted that the enemy is firing with infantry arms more than usually!!!

10.30hrs Firing goes on at Varpajärvi section !

This day of “armistice” started rainy and gloomy. Our dugout is leaking considerably, our new, handsome, much renowned dugout.
Else the new armistice appears to be rather odd. Does the Soviet Army terminology differ this much from ours?
Maybe we shall get an answer soon. At the moment Russki is firing at us furiously. We are gentlemen!!! We do not respond to firing.

11.48hrs Capt. Tenho reported that Russki started at 11.20 hrs a very intense artillery and mortar barrage that ended 11.45hrs. Russki fired several hundreds of shells (500 to 1000 pcs)

At the III Btn sector after 07.55hrs a total of 1819 shells. F.f. Work on enemy side has been going on all morning at Rajaselkä and in front of Ahvenjärvi.
At 16.16hrs an enemy whistled in front of “Tie” whereafter one of their officers shouted:
” Do not shoot! We have learned not until at 16.00hrs that a ceasefire has been made. “
Next two Russians tried to come over to us but one of them hit a mine of their own. Paramedics took him away, and the other one left, too. Exhortations to come over for a cigarette.

Ahvenjärvi section is calm but Karutjärvi section is still in action.

18.00hrs Three Russians came to our wire at “Etu”. Our men shouted at them in Russian “come here” whereby the Russians ran away, then turned and opened fire with their SMGs, and then they ran again.

19.00hrs Report to 8.D HQ:
“Tukki” was strafed at 16.30hrs with artillery and mortars, 3 privates KIA and 0+1+4 WOA.

19.30hrs report from II Btn:
Russians have entered no-man's land, e.g. one Finnish speaking Sr.Lt who much regretted this breach of truce. He told that his wireless was out of ordser and they had not received any orders from their superiors. In the morning they had seen how our lads had thrown their caps, they shouted and fired flares. This they interpreted as preparation to attack and therefore they launched barrages. The same Sr.Lt told that he knew that we did not start the war at our volition but were forced by Germany.
In front of “Suo” Russians removed the row charge at our fire, installed 29.8. , not fired off.

20.10hrs Tel. Msg no.4998/1085/III/213 4.9.44 received from 1400 :
Due to the unclear situation the following action to be taken during darkness:
Guarding must be intensified and every sentry post must be double manned. The strongholds must set a constant duty of officers and NCOs. Interpreters must be posrted in the strongholds. Flare gun use is allowed. Every incident should be dealt with in a peaceful manner. Fire can be opened only by permission of an officer in a really threatening situation during enemy attack

Since the situation is at the moment so unclear it is advised to take prisoners to gain information of the odd situation. No violent attempts, however.

5.9.1944_

10.00hrs Maj. Holopainen reported to Col.Lt. Pietarinen that yesterday three men had gone over to Russian side from 6.Coy at 17.00hrs. Another three men from 10.Coy at 19.30hrs. At the same time, likely with the aforementioned men, three artillerymen from battle forepost “1”.

Russki fired at Kaukojärvi section about 20 shells per hour. No concentrated objective. At the moment low intensity inf.fire. No movement detected.

At “Metsä”: 21.30 3” about 30 shells
“- 02.00-04.30hrs 3” about 150 shells
At “Hyrrä” : 02.00-04.30hrs light mortar 30rds

Since the start of the armistice a total of 2569 shells have been fired at our sector. Our losses include at the same period 3 KIA and 5 WIA.

12.00hrs Yellow ID markingsd are removed from Finnish aircraft. Swastikas only remain.

12.00hrs A detachment was sent from the D. to negotiate with the Russians, including Lt. Palotie, 2nd LT. Vermola and Mil. Official Tuominen. Negotiation took place in no-man's land at Siira road. The detachment was joined by Lt. Olsson and Lt. Vaulo of the Rgt. HQ. In no-man's land Lt. Vaulo hit a mine and was killed instantly. Mil. Official Tuominen was badly wounded.
In no-man's land at 12.30 hrs the negotiation detachment was met by a (Soviet ) stronghold commander who instructed the detachment to proceed to the local Btn. HQ where the negotiation took place. In the Btn. HQ the negotiation was led by the Btn. CO political deputy, a Major.
The negotiatiors include the said Major, Btn. CO, a Captain, Lt. Olsson and 2nd Lt. Vermala. Our representatives asked for the return of the men who went over yesterday. It was not accepted because yesterday the Russians still were in the state of war. Only today had they received orders to end hostilities on 5.9.at 08.00hrs. The “defectors” are considered POWs. The Politruk-Major said that Finns did not fire since 4.9, 08.00hrs. The temporary truce yesterday was due to the private initiative of local stronghold commanders. During the night they had received orders to continue hostilities. The officers told that they had against them JR4 of 8.D. and a MG battalion.
The Btn. HQ was situated S of Varpaoja W of the road in small dugouts. The reception was military and negotiations totally official. Our men were dealt with without reproach. Our detachment returned to “3” at 15.00hrs escorted by a Russian officer.

15.15hrs Order from 8.D HQ:
All training courses to be ended.

17.30hrs Order from 8.D HQ:
The strongholds must keep a man on duty round the clock.
Any kind of contact with Russians is strictly prohibited.
No entry in no-man's land without the permit of the stronghold CO

18.00hrs the abovementioned informed to the Btns.
Luoto/Salonen, Marttinen, Tanskanen

18.30hrs Maj. Mattila was allowed to pull the battle foreposts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5A and 6 to the line Uomaslampi - Kiimajärvi

06.00hrs Col. Simelius returned from furlough and at 08.00hrs took over the duties of CO from Maj. Holopainen.

10.00hrs Maj. Holopainen took over the duties of I Btn CO from Capt. Laakso.

11.00hrs The training courses for replacement men in the Boy Scout camp were ended.
Capt. Kannas/Col. Simelius.

Today Capt.Pöntys. Lt. Ravio and from the D. Capt. Koskinen left for a planning task somewhere in Kitee. (Arms cache activities maybe? Tr.rem.)

17.30hrs Situation report to 8.D HQ:
At “Saapas” 15.00hrs explosion in front
“Tie”: at 10.30hrs 2 Russians hit a mine at the same spot as Lt. Vaulo yesterday
