german bridging afv

The Germans issued a total of 20 bridgelayers on panzer IV chassis to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 5th and 10th Panzer divisions in 1940. the 4 vehicles per division were in the BL zug (bridging platoon). They were used in the campaign against France in May

However no further vehicles of this type were built. This means I assume that the Germans felt they were a failure. Was this a technical failure? or a tactical failure?

Given the quite extensive use of bridging vehicles by the Allies in their 1944 French campaign it would appear that the Allies at least found the concept of a bridging vehicle on a tank chassis a sound one. I am interested in the reasoning behind the German decision.
